Days when you know why you live in the British Isles

Recommended Posts

Although I am a Devonian I must admit parts of Cornwall are pretty impressive,

We are just back from a few days staying at Newquay,  as well as visiting a couple of lovely National Trust gardens we also did a bit of walking along the South West Coast Path

the stretch between Mawgan Porth and Newquay is very picturesque.

We stopped at Griffins Point and sat on the rock down at the end of this footpath to eat our sandwiches

This was the view out over the cliff

Then walked on to Watergate Bay

Popped out to Derwent with the drone whilst visiting Mum last week. Sadly the levels were too low to get the water over the edge shot I was hoping for, but it was nice to be back on home turf for a while!

Also had a stroll up to Mam Tor, but a group of paragliders arrived so no real opportunity to get any decent footage there.

The first boat a " number 22 Thames A Rater" passed me during the 2017 "3 Rivers Race" which actually came second overall. It had just rounded the yellow mark behind it post-15969-0-45178000-1496581339_thumb.jpg

Two sides of the same coin today perhaps......?

Firstly on 'the upside'.....

When the weather has been like it has today (Sunday)....dashing along the Cambrian Line into glorious west Wales for a day on the coast, there is no where better than the UK.....any foreign locations you could, to put it politely, quite happily 'find a place where the the sun doesn't sunshine..... and let it reside there'......?

Thanks Aberystwyth once again......

but then conversely......there was a reminder perhaps of the state seemingly the UK finds itself in at the moment from the wretched state of this flag on Aberystwyth Prom......our lovely nation perhaps currently........a bit battered, torn, tied up in knots and a shredded....but still basking in sunshine....

Despite being quite a busy Saturday afternoon other than on the short bits of road in the previous six miles we had passed one lone walker, one other mountain biker and a small walking group.

The next door neighbour has a new toy, our village with Poole Harbour just visible top left sky-line, and all the Purbecks right up to the slope at Arish Mell, and South Dorset Downs beyond.

On 22nd June 1402, Owain Glyndŵr marshalled his Welsh troops on these slopes in the foreground. Sir Edmund Mortimer with a ragbag of English men stormed up the hill to engage them. The Welsh men had the advantage of height and the English were routed. The battle was one of the greatest Welsh victories against an English army.

Looking towards Radnor Forest 615 years later. The cries of battle have long since fallen silent, leaving only the sound of grass rustling in the breeze.
