I think it usually ran into Newcastle Central itself, or at least to the avoiding/goods lines immediately to the south of the station. There are certainly lots of pictures around of class 50s on the Doncaster Works test train taken there. Edited July 22 by The Pilotman 1

Cheers Guy A few lasted into 1983 as I recall, on a test run with 50 038 from Old Oak to Taunton and back (down via Bristol, back via the Berks & Hants) in August that year our stock had a few Siphon Gs in the consist. They were rather grubby looking by then!

A friend of mine with the Fifty Alliance was always adamant that there was always one cylinder on the B side of the power unit you could never quite get right and chuck oil out despite all the effort and ‘buggering about with it’ as he put it. I’m guessing that’s responsible for 50022 not wanting a grey roof? 😜

The test train didn't always run from Donny, on several occasions the loco ran LE to Hull and pickup the excursion stock then went to Newcastle and then back to Hull then LE to Donny. 2

At least half the class kept them until being named in 1978 but not necessarily on both sides. Doncaster had a real go at removing them from 1977, perhaps it was a 10 year arrangement because Crewe didn't seem that bothered up to the end of 1976.
