Help with locos in Utah?

Recommended Posts

The nearest branch to your area is Cedar City, UT on the UP.  I will send you track maps of Cedar City which will show you the track layout and what industries used to be on those tracks.  All the hatched tracks are retired or out of service.  The line was built in 1923.  The area with the industries stretched over about 6 miles and the last 3 miles was on an ascending 1.9% grade.  There was no real "yard" in the model railroad sense.

The majority of the industries on that line are building supplies (3 lumber dealers, a pipe company, a cement company and a copper products co.)  Don't get too excited by the "Pullman Storage" track.  Back in the 1940-s-50's and before they might have tourists go out there and that's where they would park the Pullman cars.  Railroads tend to name things and the names will stick forever after.

I would reccommend using Google or Bing Maps to look at Cedar City, UT.  That will show you what a railroad in St George might have looked like.  Caveat : most of the track in Cedar City is retired, the crossings are paved over and a lot of the tracks are gone but you can see where they were.

The team track is just north of N 100 W and W 400 N  :

Cheers dave i shall do that later on this evening! One final question though, isn't this kato nw2 http://www.nscaleamericantrains.co.uk/en/dc-and-dcc-ready/32438-emd-nw2-union-pacific-1020.html

have the post 1980s UP livery as it has "Serves all the west" on the cab side?

No, that is an earlier slogan. It apparently started on the switchers in 1940, and was last put on a new loco about 1957. It lasted until the '70s (from Trainboard postings - no backup info).

1020 actually only lasted until 1972 when it was wrecked. It was scrapped in 1973.

Dear Lloyd (GWR),

Everything you'd want to know about UP NW2s

I draw your attention to

Road #     Built            Build#   Date Retd    Notes

UP 1020  Feb 1941     1249     Mar 1973     Wrecked (crushed cab) on 21 October 1972 at Las Vegas, Nev.; scrapped by UP Omaha, Neb., in March 1973.

Happy Modelling,

PS Of course, there's no documentation to contradict the rumor that UP 1020 was not actually "scrapped",
but rather was sold-for-scrap-value to a shortline or loco rebuilder, who happened to have a spare cab available,
rebuilt the loco to working condition, and onsold it to your modelled railroad...

By the 1980's the NW2's were gone and the SW1200's had been rebuilt into SW10's, they were the standard yard switcher when I was in Utah.  An SW10 has raised hood in the radiator area and more or less a GP7/9 radiator grille and fans installed.  Did not improve the aesthetics, but did make the cooling system better.

The NW2 could easily be a stand in for an SW10.
