DavidB-AU
Australia is going to get 3700hp GE PowerHauls. The PH37ACmai will be mechanically the same as a class 70, but outwardly will be very different. For starters, it will be narrow gauge for use in Queensland and Western Australia. It will also have the typical brutish single cab like everything else in Australia these days. The other end will house the massive radiator required for working in the hot Australian climate. United Group Rail, GE's Australian agent, is building two demonstrators. Not overly pretty but nowhere near as ugly as a class 70! QRModeller
That looks like a cross between a Class 60 and an NR Class! Matt.

EddieB
Interesting lash-up there, David. I make it one ex-Vicrail G class, two ex-ANR GMs (Co-Co variety/GM12s) and a whole load of ex-SRA power (48, 49, 442) - is that right?
DavidB-AU
Yep. The locos are G514-GM27-44204-44206 up front and 4910-4904-4917-48s33-GM22 banking. 48s33 was originally 4829. Cheers David

RMweb Premium Peter Beckett Posted March 23, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 23, 2012 (edited) I wonder if Ted could get it as scrap value and use it to start the Melbourne to Tulla link? Peter Edited March 23, 2012 by Peter Beckett
DavidB-AU
I don't think he'd want it. It's orphan technology and spares are in short supply. Metro Transport Sydney already has 2 of the 6 trains out of service and cannibalised for parts. I am reliably informed they could be down to 3 or even 2 operable sets by the end of the year. Metro Transport Sydney has been bought outright by the state government. As well as the ability to demolish the monorail, it brings the light rail into government hands so it can be expanded and integrated into the rest of the network, Cheers David
P.C.M
Here are a couple of mine from last week. It was nice to see the A class still get a bit of passenger work. Cheers Peter.
RMweb Gold tractionman Posted April 7, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2012 Hi Peter, I've been checking this thread for a while as I am bound for Vic in November and am hoping to spend some of the time out and about with my camera. Those photos you've posted above are of just the kind of traction I was hoping to see! Can you give me any pointers, eg locations - where I ought to head to see some of the older locos still working? I am going to be based in Melbourne/Weribee for most of my two weeks. cheers, Keith
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted April 7, 2012 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 7, 2012 Hi Keith - Drop me a PM and we can talk off-board as I can advise but the level of detail might be best conveyed in a PM or email.
P.C.M
Hi Keith, Rick can certainly help you out with some gen on where to go. I would also have a look at the Railpage forum. look for the Victoria section. Vic sightings has some up to date info on whats going on. There is also photo location section that will help you find a few spots to try out. Cheers Peter.
RMweb Gold tractionman Posted April 11, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 11, 2012 Thanks very much Peter for your reply - and to Rick too (PM sent, thanks). I'll enjoy planning my visit and post pics on my return! all the best, Keith
Bert Cheese
I spent 1998/1999 travelling around Australia, though railways and such were not a priority I did see a few things that grabbed my attention. First off a shot of the Sydney monorail at Darling Harbour, followed by some trammage in Melbourne. Next up for the scanner will be some W.A iron ore (Port Headland) and Pilbara museum (Dampier) shots hopefully..is anyone interested in seeing such things?
