During the mid-60s refurbishment D138 - 173 had their split headcodes replaced by the single type and all gained the small side grilles. I'm not sure why the headcode replacement was deemed necessary, however many Class 45s were converted to the single type as well - with the exposed small grilles too, making these and Class 46s look almost identical - and I remember reading somewhere that the Peak refurbishment programme would have had both classes tidied up and looking the same, however underfunding meant the cosmetic changes to the Class 45s came to a premature end, with just the more important technical improvements being applied. I used to love going to St Pancras, walking across the road from Kings Cross you had a stunning building and that massive roof! The two Classes visible in this photo were the only ones to be renumbered in a random manner. Class 45/0 was not entirely random because once the fifty ETH-fitted 45/1s had been completed at Derby the remaining pre-TOPS locos were quickly renumbered into the 45/0 series in numerical order, presumably therefore at depots. Nonetheless Class 45 had the distinction of scoring both the first TOPS- numbered diesel (45101, ex-D96) in March 1973, and the last (45071, ex-D125) in December 1975, the latter delayed due to extensive collision damage repairs which saw it emerge as the first Peak with flush nose ends and twin headlights. 1 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

eastwestdivide Posted July 27 Share Posted July 27 (edited) Back up to date, and 45118 had an outing from Bristol to York today, seen here passing Rotherham running early. The "Diamond Jubilee Express" railtour, dropping people off for a gala on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway at Duffield en route - the diamond jubilee being that of the class 14, many of which were in action on the EVR. Nice mix of coaches including Scotrail liveried Mk3s, and a 47 for insurance on the back, which was doing very little as it passed me.
