Agreed about the battery box covers ('X' pattern on 45s, plain on 46s, for those wondering....) - first thing I look for when studying photos of Peaks with a flush end and illegible number, just to be sure of what I'm looking at.....!

My understanding is that D138-173 had central bar in a centre head code box and D174-193 had centre head codes (no central bar)

I visited once whilst in London after the suburban services had been diverted to Thameslink, dewired and tired looking, I was shocked.

I used to love going to St Pancras, walking across the road from Kings Cross you had a stunning building and that massive roof! It always seemed quieter than other London terminals and I was guaranteed to see something different from my diet of 37's and 47's.

A day trip to London from Southampton with my Dad in the late 70s allowed us to feast on exotic treats. King's Cross for Deltics, St Pancras for Peaks and Paddington for a good Italian restaurant!

On 12th June 2024 45108, based at the East Lancashire Railway, gets a tow through Deighton from 20189+20142 'SIR JOHN BETJEMAN', working as 0Z23, Castleton Hopwood Ground Frame to Grosmont North Yorkshire Moors, ready for attendance at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway diesel gala from 14th - 16th June.

Oh, NOW numbering them at both ends makes sense - twice as many flame-cut number panels to flog!

 

(Or am I just getting cynical in my old age 🤔Actually I've been pretty cynical about a lot of things for a very long time - it has served me well.....)

Yes, back then it was 'at your own risk'. These days the criminally determined can scale the railway's high-security fencing, suffer serious injury or worse and somehow it's still the railway's fault for failing to protect stupid people from themselves. Oops, cynicism creeping in again 🤐😬!

The two Classes visible in this photo were the only ones to be renumbered in a random manner. Class 45/0 was not entirely random because once the fifty ETH-fitted 45/1s had been completed at Derby the remaining pre-TOPS locos were quickly renumbered into the 45/0 series in numerical order, presumably therefore at depots. Nonetheless Class 45 had the distinction of scoring both the first TOPS- numbered diesel (45101, ex-D96) in March 1973, and the last (45071, ex-D125) in December 1975, the latter delayed due to extensive collision damage repairs which saw it emerge as the first Peak with flush nose ends and twin headlights.

Back up to date, and 45118 had an outing from Bristol to York today, seen here passing Rotherham running early. The "Diamond Jubilee Express" railtour, dropping people off for a gala on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway at Duffield en route - the diamond jubilee being that of the class 14, many of which were in action on the EVR.

Nice mix of coaches including Scotrail liveried Mk3s, and a 47 for insurance on the back, which was doing very little as it passed me.
