RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted April 10, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 10, 2014 In BR days there was a geotechnics group at Derby I think, acting as consultants across the entire system, of course. No doubt disappeared in the early stages of privatisation. And in the late '80s, the Southern Civil Engineer employed a firm (called Can?) to spray concrete on the cliffs west of Brighton station. In the same era there was a consultant's study on the White Cliffs of Dover, which concluded it was, despite de-watering and other measures, inevitable that they would fall down at some stage to the extent of rendering the railway impassable. A wag suggested that instead of taking the precautionary measures, they should invest the money with Joe Coral at long odds, knowing when it happened there would be a big win to pay for remedial works! They were originally based in Mousehole Tunnel which was on the Up side opposite Westbourne Park station - both in teh tunnel and in various buildings which were erected across the end of it. RJS1977
Completely off topic, but where did the other end of Mousehole tunnel come out, Mike? I've seen the WP entrance many times on trips to Paddington and always wondered where it went...
Andy Y
Hands or flags? Andi I've had another look and it's hands waving flags; that may sound pedantic but it looked like the passengers had been instructed to wave flags at the good people of Dawlish (or at least the web cam ).

lightengine
[pedant]New Red Sandstone (or Sherwood Sandstone in new money) in fact [/pedant] Pore water pressure is a factor, but NR have been getting geotech advice from ?Camborne School of Mines. If drilling a hole was going to make a significant difference I think it would have fallen down on its own already. Sorry, yes my mistake, New Red Sandstone. (I got excited.) Granitechops
Interesting point noticed on the Spotlight Southwest feature tonight http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0403p4m/Spotlight_10_04_2014/ new wall at washout is 2 foot higher (at a guestimate ) than the old wall along side

I've seen the WP entrance many times on trips to Paddington and always wondered where it went... Perhaps it goes to Mousehole, in which case might it do as the diversionary route we've all been waiting for?
Granitechops
Just been reviewing the video footage I took on Friday 4th on the trip Dawlish to the Warren and I see what looks like some "L" shaped precast sections used where there was a further minor washout up towards Dawlish Warren was not aware of this previously, & had not seen it mentioned although I must admit I have not read every page if this thread

Granitechops
This is where I shot my pictures from yesterday of SNG took the beach buggy wheel chair down through that sand & up to the barrier fence, only just got wheel spin the last 18 inches But with a helping push got back on concrete again!! All the security guys so far have been very helpful & polite The path along there under the platform overhang is not suitable for anyone in a wheelchair that has a bad back very uneven rough cobbles in places at speed you can feel seasick!! EDIT:- sorry for the quality of that pic was a screen shot from my camera in video mode in AVI (non HiDef) the pics of SNG yesterday were screen shots taken on my HiDef vid cam in MP4 A camileo S30, a dinky bit of gear, hardly bigger than my mobile gives brilliant pictures even on my 43 " screen the large screen is great for blowing up details in pics that would be difficult to see on a small screen I find that very useful when trying to work out what is going on, on the web cams Edited April 11, 2014 by Granitechops

The camera at the other end doesn't seem to be updating now. Is the big red spidery thing lurking? I'm expecting concrete very soon.
