Washout at Dawlish

"Diesel locomotive" listed both ways.  Down working timed for 95mph max and up for 75mph.   Streak to mysteriously replace diesel and authorised for 95mph??? 

The A4 replaces the diesel at Westbury on the Down and vice versa on the Up. Otherwise is load 11 passenger coaches when diesel-hauled (Woking - Westbury - Woking) and 11 coaches plus support coach when 60007 is on the front (Westbury - Kingswear - Westbury). Max permissable speed when diesel-hauled is 95 mph, max permissable speed when hauled by A4 is 75 mph.

Up HST just gone by the Beach Cam with what sounds like a jammed horn. Sounding continuously as it approached and passed and still audible as it neared Langstone Rock. Would this be sufficient reason to fail the train?

Strange sea on the Dawlish Beach cam this morning

 

the waves

 

are running at RIGHT ANGLES to the shore, ie.   south to north

 

with just a slight ripple in front of the cam

 

 

The weather chart shows a breeze from the North-west at the moment...

Yes I heard that too,  still blowing as it passed up the estuary beyond Powderham Castle & Kenton

wondered wether something would overheat

 

or

 

wether a fuse would blow

 

I expect he will have communicated ahead,

 for   a look see at Exeter

As a retired electrician that would have been my answer a few years ago but now I find myself being given over to the dark side and employing fitter thoughts. :nono:

No use being a sparky, horns are air powered.

There is an isolating cock *somewhere*...

After 2 months of railway inactivity Teignmouth station is having work done to it on the down platform. Why not do it in the last 2 months?

Don't they have an electrically powered pump somewhere? Or is it driven off the engine (Air brake supply?)

The compressors on a train power all sorts of equipment, control air, brakes, horns, wipers, suspension... Trains won't work without air

Yes, if it couldn't be "fixed" en route. I had the high tone on a Crompton stick on years ago at Haywards Heath. Isolating cock had seized so I considered using a stepladder to jam a banana in it. 2 problems... One: Using a stepladder in close proximity to the 3rd rail would have been a Darwin award waiting to happen. Two: I didn't have a banana.

I carried on and failed the loco at Three Bridges. Pete.

Re. Thursdays railtour through Dawlish, this is an extract from a post on our local town forum --

 

60007 is travelling from Didcot Light Engine on Thursday

NOTE:  light engine movements are subject to the operational requirements of the published timetable but this is an extract from its intended path

 

WOODBORO PASS 07:37
 LAVINGTON PASS 07:50
 HEYWDRDJN PASS 07:59
 WESTBURYW arr. 08:10

 

The diesel hauled train is due at Westbury at 1058 ( from Warminster direction )

S N G is timetabled to leave Westbury at 1130

The compressors are electric, but without air the train cannot move so you have a choice: a noisy, moving train or a silent, stationary one. It also takes a LONG time to exhaust all the air from the main reservoir, it's stored at up to 140 PSI in a large tank and would take forever to exhaust through the horn. It's not as if you can switch off the compressor and the horn would stop instantly.

Continuing on, then,

 

Dawlish Town beach is open to the right  when you go under the girder bridge just south of the Station

 

including the seawall walk beside the railway  ( King's Walk )

around the corner past the toilets (open)  towards Coryton Cove along Early's Wall

Just past the huts is the beach cafe, open

 

& beyond is access  to Coryton Cove with a railway tunnel both ends

Beyond which again is

 

Horse Cove

 

& Shell Cove ( private land access )

 

the last two NOT safely accessible on foot along the shore at neap tides

 

And great care needs to be taken not to get to cut off even when there are spring tides

 

 

 

PLEASE take great care along the beaches

 

many have to be rescued each year,  often by volunteers
