The second coach has a broken window and an open or missing door, and there's a wagon on the back. EDIT (3 Feb): Found my notes, and this was 15 Jan 1985, loco 33054 with S84510, KDB977095, DB977006, and wagon ZDW ADS39555. The 977xxx coaches had been in Hoo Junction when I passed by earlier that morning. 977095 was listed as an S&T brake coach, converted 1982, and 977006 as a CCE staff coach, converted 1981. And one for LifeboatMan, an East Grinstead rush hour service at possibly Forest Hill in 1981/82: (off a print, so not great quality. The neg's round here somewhere) EDIT: BR(S) says it's Anerley (see later post 36). Thanks. And a 33/2 on "home ground" with the Mountfield/Northfleet gypsum, Robertsbridge in 1984. The rush hour East Grinstead and Uckfield trains really were a cushy number. I hadn't long been at Norwood but compared to freight and being barked at for the slightest mistake by one of Norwood's many rather dour Scots drivers, they were a nice easy turn of duty. After the run-round at Uckfield, we had a decent bit of time before heading back, so we'd walk through the train to see if anything had been left behind... you know, newspapers, wallets, cases of scotch, dead bodies etc. You're right, the stock was pretty grim. It used to go to ecs to NXG as I recall, the UP sidings and the footbridge over the main lines long since gone. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

If it was me that would be the last coach to be riding in on such a cold day. Is it possible that this train is heading for Eastleigh for repair/ overhaul as they do all look a bit tatty? Rivercider Posted February 2, 2014 Share Posted February 2, 2014 (edited) Here are a couple of shots of class 33s on Portsmouth Harbour - Bristol/Cardiff workings. This route had been poorly served in the 1970s, with a handful of loco hauled through services. Supplemented by Cardiff - Bristol local DMU workings, Bristol - Westbury/Salisbury local DMUs, and Salisbury - Portsmouth DEMU workings. In the early 1980s the route gained an hourly service for most of the day initially worked by Bath Road 31s then by class 33s. Eastleighs class 33/0s were the regular performers on this route, though when the 33s subsequently worked as far as Weston-super-Mare, Milford Haven, Manchester and Holyhead other members of the class also appeared. Here are a couple of pictures taken at Trowbridge on a saturday in August 1983. Of interest I saw five Hither Green allocated locos on the workings that day, 33037,33045,33048,33051 and 33056 as well as Eastleighs 33112 with 4TC set 418. 33026 calls at Trowbridge in the afternoon with a train for Portsmouth Harbour, 20/8/83 33056 The Burma Star calls at Trowbridge with a service for Bristol Temple Meads, 20/8/83 cheers Edited February 2, 2014 by Rivercider 6 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was born in Exeter near Exmouth Junction and could see the line from our front garden. The class 33s took over working the Waterloo -Exeter trains in October 1971, six 33/0 diagrams were required. Going a little off post but it has always struck me that the North and West line would make a good prototype to model than its relative scarcity in appearences would suggest for a diesel era layout. Nice scenery, semaphore signalling and a good variety of trains and traction. 50s on a short TPO, a 56 on a Freightliner and drifting through at a different time on the Severn Tunnel - Moreton on Lugg 'pickup' along with 25s, 37s, 40s and 47s on a goodly variety of tank trains and Speedlink services. Even for a couple of Autumns in the eighties banking engines made a reappearence at Abergavenny before Sandite trains where introduced. 10 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Freights on the SE Division between 1981-85 this time to balance out all those Portsmouth-Cardiff-Crewe workings: Two in the same location at Strood, tanks possibly from New Hythe (33201), plus two Eastleigh 33s (33010 and 33027) on the Allington-Westbury ARC aggregates empties Still at Strood, some ferry traffic coming out of the former canal tunnel, 33049: More ferry wagons, this time at Cuxton Road, Strood, at the foot of the 1:100 Sole Street bank (33048) And more tanks, at Hoo Junction, 33052: The non-lighting posts visible here were apparently former overhead line posts - a few SR yards had overhead for the class 71 electric locos. All that was slightly before my time though, only ever saw the 71s stored in a long line for scrap. I was a Guard at Ashford and we were supposed to relieve a Faversham Guard at Sandwich. We got dropped off at the box and the Faversham man got home an hour early Passing two other 33's at Hither Green, the P.A.D. is in the background The original trainferry dock has a short second lease of life when the replacemet linkspan had a problem. Here two 33's wait for the 'Chartres' to berth Ferry Chargeman Albert Turner waits patiently. Albert was a true character. 33008 named 'Eastleigh' at Dover Town waiting to depart.
