Strange coincidence - around the time you posted this I was wondering what the situation is now with this loco, and whether it has a future (intact I mean, as opposed to a contribution to the razor blade industry 🙄.....)

I was thinking the same thing when I posted it! The owner is a mate of my brother's apparently, I'd love to know what's going to happen to it.

 

Meanwhile, here's fellow WR namer 47 079 'G.J.Churchward' at Swindon back in 1984...

Ah well, one day we'll find out, hopefully it'll be good news not bad, but it has been outside for many years which is concerning.

 

The lighting in this pic clearly shows where the original longer nameplate was fitted. I was away from WR territory during most of its time in blue with the shortened name and don't recall seeing it like this. In 1984 47079 was about to go through two transformations in quick succession as it became one of the GWR150 lined green quartet in 1985 then in 1987 was the first '47' to receive the new Railfreight triple-grey sector colours, nameless of course and a bit of a blow TBH - I remember thinking at the time, "Why that one?!" Somewhere I have a photo of it like this, not long after painting and parked, oddly enough, on Swindon stabling point (actually it wasn't that odd because I'd moved there around about the time you took this pic which looks like summer....🙂!?)

I forgot to add, it's not mine, I think it's a Martin Loader pic! 😉 

 

'079's original full length plates were removed in the Factory at Old Oak and the new shorter ones in the then corporate style were fitted in March '79. One of the full length plates is in the collection at the NRM.

So these weren't cut-down versions of the original plates then, I've often wondered (why? - all I had to do was ask on here 😉!) Did this happen due to sideswipe damage to one of the plates? Also, as @Peter Kazmierczak has just pointed out, these were not in the then new corporate style (only 47089 'Amazon' received such replacements, which sadly didn't last long), but they may have been one-piece castings - it has been a few years since I last saw it but the 'North Star' plate hanging on the wall in Swindon's STEAM museum appeared to be such a single casting - so definitely not original. 

 

As Peter also says, the plates for D1660-4 were assembled in the same manner as the Westerns - apologies if I've mentioned this previously (I'm sure I have!) but the only two letters not used on Western plates were 'J' and 'Z', meaning that D1664/47079 had the only 'Js' in the 79 names. File under 'Western Trivia'!

Sorry, yes you're right, the shortened plates on '079 were the same style as the originals, I was getting mixed up with '089.

 

The 'North Star' plate at Swindon back in 2010 does appear to be a one piece casting, although it's possible the joins in the outer beading have been filled and polished...

Wasn’t 1O42 the York - Poole that ran via the GCR before that route closed and was regularly a (Darnell?) Class 37?

This was the headcode carried by an immaculate D1106 at Reading one month earlier (5/4/69) - my photo is somewhere earlier in this thread. As a Cornish-based spotter still with loads of WR 47s to capture this was a cop of monstrous proportions! (To put this into perspective, D1889 turned up shortly after and this was only my second D18xx Brush.)

A visit to Kings Cross in late July 1970 finally nailed 'all the ones', and 1500 as well which appeared to be the only 'Generator' still in green livery, and I didn't mind that at all!

A while back elsewhere on here we had a few of the diesel drags that were necessary on the Kings Cross-Bradford FS services after Class 91 introduction, but prior to electrification reaching Bradford:

 

 

As a result I thought I'd fish out a few of my meagre efforts photographing these trains at Leeds in 1991.

Very interesting pics Nidge.

I thought D1500 was the first of the 'Generator' cl.47s, so should have ETH gear on the bufferbeam?

Also, I wonder what 'MT' means on the first pic? Has it (twice) on the front end but also on the side corner -  does it just mean 'empty' as in fuel/water etc before going into Works?

 

Great stuff anyway, always look forward to your pics @Rugd1022, especially the Transition period-late '70s

MT does usually mean devoid of liquids. RE the  ETH, I have seen a photo before with all the relevant junction boxes, but no cables at either end.
