Back in the Spring of 2005 there was a brief period when holders of a Gold Card (annual season) issued by "First Great Eastern" had their free weekend travel honoured by the new "Anglia" franchise. I went out for the day with a mate, and here are my logs from the day. We drove to Colchester North to start.

(Anglia withdrew the perk after a while, and I never bought another Gold Card. It was only Hatfield Peverel to Chelmsford after all!)

I thought that it was about time I posted a few more photos, please excuse some of them!

First off some Electrics from the past few years:

Class 86s
Not sure of the date but certainly taken during the last few months of 86 service:

On the last day of service I chased 86235 around the county, first off at Chelmsford heading to Liverpool Street:

Then down to Manningtree:

I really liked 90036 in its variation of the Railfreight Distribution livery and went out quite a few time whilst it was on loan here:

Some diesel action:

Despite seeing lots of DRS 20s on the Flasks, that is one train I really should have photographed more!

20s at Kelvedon:

Now I remember back in March 2005 hearing that a 90 had failed and DRS 37606 was drafted in to work a service from Liverpool Street to Norwich. So I quickly went home, got my camera and headed to Witham to get a shot of it. Not great weather, it was grey and damp, but nice nevertheless!

And finally some Brush Type 5 action!

60034 and 60096 were on a possession around Ingatestone a few years ago, unfortunately 034 wasn’t in a very good position for photographing. However, 096 was!

I too have some more recent photos of the GEML, first of which is the infamous Shenfield Shark:

For shark lovers everywhere, especially those in distant lands. This shot was yesterday (Sunday), and the only view possible without looking through the emu beside it. Incidentally, all trains were using the "main line", the "electric" was being upgraded for Crossrail.

Cheers, Will!

That was taken 5 days ago....

I expect then when I kick le bucket the Shark will still be in Shenfield.

Best, Pete.

Hi Pete,

This morning on my way to work I got off at Shenfield to take a few photos of the Shark for you:

Re: the Shenfield Shark... found in December 2014's "Rail Express"...

"Dumped at Shenfield since the 1990s, "Shark" brake van No. DB993733 was finally due to be taken away on October 24, although the move had still to happen as the month ended. It was due to be taken by rail to Chelmsford for onward movement by road".

Someone bought it? As it's still there, I guess they changed their mind.

It has probably been found impracticable and/or impossible to remove it without considerable expense. There was a similar removal of an old tube train recently that necessitated removing the cars from their bogies, moving them by crane onto accommodation bogies and transferring them to lorries to be taken away for scrap. This could probably be justified by the scrap value of the largely aluminium tube train, but a single four wheel vehicle with a largely wooden body has very little scrap value and even a preservationist would baulk at the cost of hiring a crane to remove it.

I've not actually been to Shenfield, but I believe the circumstances are similar to the SR brake at Manea.

Removal would entail hire of a crane for a lift onto a lorry. That is 2 big expenses for a start. But to do this you need a track possession, at even more expense.

Back to the trains - just saw a down (Norwich) express formed of ex-Virgin "Pretendolino" stock pass through Hatfield Peverel, this would have been the 1700 departure from Liverpool Street. This is not really 'news' (the transfer was reported in Rail Express last year) but I sort of took a double take on it. It looked so odd. Propulsion was by a Greater Anglia class 90 in white.

Digging through some old pics the other day and found these. Not high quality but I was only about 13 or so and could not afford a good camera.

They might be of interest to someone. I was only an occasional visitor to Essex for family reasons and it made a change from my usual Nottingham spotting.

I used to really like the "Clacton" units in maroon.
