Hi everyone

I shall be visiting this area of France later in the year.

Can anyone suggest good railway places to visit or good locations to see freight or interesting passenger workings?

I shall actually be in Geneva but plan to cross into France to see some SNCF action!

Any depots or freight yards that can be accessed for photography or video?

Cheers

Amberieu is quite good- it's where the Lyon- Bourg-en-Bresse- Dijon line meets the line that serves both Geneva and Modane/Chambery. Regular passenger services, and quite a bit of freight.

There is also a small railway museum, which pays particular attention to the activities of Resistance Fer in the region- they specialised in dropping big locos into turntable pits 'accidentally'.

There are a few preserved electrics at Amberieu.

CC7002, CC7106, CC6549, CC6561,  BB9256, BB9269 for instance.

This site may help get you more info:

There's an email link on there.  No harm in emailing them and asking if a visit to Amberieu depot is an option.  That's how I ended up visiting Mohon depot earlier this month.

cheers for the tips

i'd like to see the round house at chambery although i don't it's open to random visitors

i will try to spend a few hour at amberieu to film a few trains

Nothing ventured.  Haven't been to Chambery for many years, but I did manage to see quite a lot of interesting stuff there on random visits.  You never can tell with France - sometimes permission will be granted (I never expected to be allowed in at Dijon-Perrigny), at other times (weekends) you might have a job finding someone to ask!

http://www.savoie-mont-blanc.com/offre/fiche/rotonde-sncf/73CHSOR100030 suggests that groups can visit- you could try contacting them and see if there's an Anglophone group you could join. Alternatively on the 'Journées de patrimoine' (European Heritage Days, 14th/15th September), they normally have an open day

  • 4 weeks later...

I had a stop over in Chambrey on the 14th Sept,on my way to Milan, managed an hour on the Sunday morning(8.15-9.20am) while waiting for my TGV, it was like a British winters day, dark and damp, but warm.

Don't know anything about French railways, but here's the photo's i took, not the best, seemed it could be a busy place, loads of locos in and around the roundhouse, there was a couple of freights didn't bother a picture they were to fast for the poor light.
