I may be a little while......

Good luck with your fight, Chris! You've beat it once, you can beat it again!

As I type this, I'm hooked to an IV getting my second of many treatments for Leukemia. Yesterday I sat in this chair with two Slaters P.O. wagon kits on a table in front of me, gluing it together. Yesterday AM they were "new in box", today they're on their wheels with about 1/2 the brake gear installed. By the end of today, they should be ready for touch-up paint and weathering... I'll have to figure out which of my Parkside/Slaters kits to bring in for my next treatment. Don't think I dare bring in a brass kit and soldering iron, however... :tomato:

Hi Mike,

Β

That is the spirit. I hope your treatment goes well, it is great that you are being so positive and trying to get on with things during what must be a very difficult time for you. This post is an inspiration to me and makes me want to go down to my workbench straight away and do some earthing positive. I got the wheels and couplings done the other day and have since got on with preparing a Missouri Pacific 50' Boxcar for detailing and reprinting. Got rid of the moulded on detail at one end last night and am going to tackle the other end now. I wish you all the best in your fight against the disease you have. Stay positive.

Chris,

If you want to see a picture of me working on the PO wagons while being treated, look at my workbench thread...

Hi Mike, thanks for the link, wonderful stuff and a great shot of you modelling in hospital. Brilliant. U r an inspiration. I hope your treatment is going ok.

Β

I got some good news today, the cancer has not spread and I have been given a date for my operation - 16th September at the Royal Marsden in London. Got home about an hour ago after a day of final pre-op tests and final scans etc. surgeon is confident he can get the whole thing out but he will leave some serious evidence of where he has been - not that my looks can be made much worse. Should be in for just over a week then will be back to work this side of new year. Going to do some serious modelling over the next 10 days. Can't wait to get on with the op, and get back to work / normal family life. On a positive note I'll have plenty of time to plan for my contribution to TVNAM '14. Something late 80's BN or late 90's BNSF is seriously tempting me atm. Pacific NW (BN) or California (BNSF).

Β

Anyway off to bed now, completely knackered but feeling really positive.

Β

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick update. I'm lying on my bed in the Royal Marsden Hospital in London composing this quick message on my iPad. Had the procedure to remove the tumour in my face yesterday. Surgeon is very please with how it went though we will have to wait for 3 weeks for the bone which was removed to be fully analysed. Face looks like I've done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson and the inside of my mouth was visited by a mad dentist, but I'm hooked up to a morphine self dispenser which is keeping me happy. Thanks to everyone on here for your messages of support. Can't wait to get home to get on with some modelling.

Cheers

Chris

Thanks for the support everyone has shown me over the past 2 months or so. I'm now two weeks post op and after a few moments when things were a bit hit and miss I seem to have come out of the other side at last and can start to think about getting back in the saddle. On the plus side I have 8 less teeth to clean, have lost nearly 30lb in weight and have no facial scars, on the downside I'm still very weak and find everything a bit more of an effort than before .Talking is very difficult and physio can only be described as a challenge. I'm determined to start modelling again and intend to do 1 hr a day from tomorrow. Long term prognosis is still not clear but we should know what that is within 2 weeks and be ready to deal with it one way or another. In the time I have been grounded I have been undertaking a great deal of research on BN operations in Washington mid 80's till merger and more interestingly in the Iron Ore Railways of Northern Quebec in the early 90's. I've fallen in love with the QNS&L, in particular their fleet of SD40s and SD40-2s operated around this time. Perhaps some off line RPM is a possibility here, think of what it would take to do a reasonable representation of this beast of a railroad in HO! In addition I am somewhat intrigued by the Quebec Iron and Titanium Railway which seems very achievable from a modelling project in HO. A freelance version using GP15s, MP15ACs, SW1200s and rakes of 15-20 iron ore cars shuttling for a short distance from mine to dock would be interesting. Anyway off to do some physio now.

After a few unforeseen problems and two operations I think I can now say I'm starting on the road to recovery from this episode of cancer, it may return in the future, but that is the future and I'm trying to stay focussed on here and now. I'd like to say many thanks for all the encouragement and support I have received from the members of this forum, when you are down you realise what is important, and the thoughts and kindness of others has been important in helping me remain focussed on getting better.

Β

Anyway I look forward to seeing those of you who I know at modelling events in the future around the UK, and making the acquaintance of those of you whom I'm yet to meet.

Cheers

Hi Jack, thanks for your kind thoughts. I'm home now but have had to be in London about 2 days per week including a number of overnight stays. As you may recall, I live in Derby, however the team who have been looking after me are based at the Royal Marsden hospital in Chelsea. The cancer I have is a rare type which affects the head and neck area and requires specialist oncology and surgical expertise which is only available at 3 places in the UK.

It's been a while since I last posted but I thought I'd add one last update to say that yesterday I received a green light to return to work on a part time basis from next Monday, it seems like an eternity since this whole affair started and for me this is the last step on my return to normality.

Β

My consultants are very happy with how things are going and the progress I have made. I just scraped through a medical to determine my fitness to work, though I'm restricted in what I can do. I will be reliant on my son and wife to provide transport to and from my office as I cannot drive for a few more weeks, but that is an inconvenience rather than a real issue.

Β

Being off work is not something I like for long periods, there is only so much modelling and so many classic car restoration programs even I can watch. On the plus side I have learnt how to use the washing machine, drier, Hoover and oven and I am now fully trained in domestic maintenance.

Β

I'd like to say a very big thanks to all who have supported me on this forum with kind words and messages. It helps to know that others are rooting for you when times are dark.

Cheers

Now that's some good news on a grey day. Small steps at first and then a little longer. I had every confidence in you. I'm not sure about the "domestic maintenance", you'll be doing the ironing next. (there speaks some-one who's been doing just that for several years now. I was told it was exercise after my heart operation!)

Keep us informed on your progress. :superman:Β Β

Hi Chris - great news, but take it gently and steadily - your health is important and you mustn't be impatient.

I had 2 NHS letters at lunchtime, one from the Health Centre inviting me for an annual medical and blood test. along with a specimin - and the other giving me the appointment for #2 cataract op on 7th January next year - can't wait!
