lippy
During the miners strike in the mid 80's,Thornaby allocated pairs of 56 (instead of the usual pairs of 37's) to the Lacken-Workington steel trains, some of these 56 where still being run in and some had just come out of works(you could still smell the wet paint!!) 56119-134 sid.jpg 56134-119 wk.jpg 119-134 at Siddick juc 115j 56131-028 wk.JPG 131-028 leaving the exchange sidings 56133-097 wk.jpg 133-097 leaving Workington 115k 56131-128 workington.JPG 131-128 standing in the steelworks exchange sidings Ray Tyne Yard Drivers worked this from Tyne to Workington and back. RMweb Premium Gary H Posted May 25, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) the first 2 locos in the above photos are now colas locos, both of which ive failed with! We had a little Colas 56 trouble down this way not to long ago. An empty rail delivery train stopped at the protection near to Tavi yard for the run up Hemerdon bank.(1:42) The driver remarked that the 56 couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and it promptly stalled before reaching the top! Luckily the signaller let him run back down and get a run up and he made it the 2nd time but only just! Makes wonder if some of these have been de-rated or not? d winpenny
Great pictures on this thread as always, in reference to Gary h's comment about not being able to pull the skin off a rice pudding as they were originally designed for heavy freight and being able to pull anything is it just deteration over time with age so unable to do the job as well or is freight just getting heavier ? RMweb Gold big jim Posted May 25, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 25, 2014 Hi Jim, Did you manage to blow this one up too? no, never blew that old girl up, i'm always gentle, that was actually the first 56 i drove! regards being derated, even amongst the current colas fleet there are marked differences between locos, i think some may have been derated, 56087 is certainly not as powerful as say 56302, its most noticable from a standing start, mid range they seem about similar

I wish I could go back to these days with a better camera, or a better knowledge of how to use the one I had !! Cheers, Phil.

RMweb Gold big jim Posted May 27, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 27, 2014 3rd pic down of the batch above, in the background, the procor curtain sider wagon, thats the first ever picture i've seen of a real one, i always thought it was a Hornby "neverwazza" wagon (ive still got the one i bought in the 80s!)
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 29, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 29, 2014 As i'm scanning the pics, I do seem to be spending more time looking at the background than the main subject! All sorts of little details on show, but the main thing I've noticed is how many loco's have telegraph poles/lamps/chimneys/masts/trees, etc, growing out of the roof A selection of red stripe & dutch. Plus line side verges and buildings to which endless thoughts of " oh love that but what if I did that ?" etc etc. great red stripe pics phil. The background of photos can be a gold mine of info, lots of detail like depot clutter, lineside equipment, and platform furniture. I like the shot of 56091 back along, is that passing Derby? cheers

RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted June 1, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 1, 2014 A few in coal sector colours. There's at least two loco's with a digit missing from the number, first pic of 073, & 080 stood behind 074 on Knottingley shed.
