Wrong sitcom. Nouvion in France.

Don't think they had flying 'elmets in the Middle Ages....

Sadly when I went there (it is a real village) I didn't find a flying helmet or wet celery. Or a cafe!

There are two Nouvion's. One is on the Somme and the other is further south. The one on the Somme is more geographically correct for 'Allo 'Allo.

I went to Edam in Holland and it was closed apart from a café that was very like Rene's.

There was a suggestion that it was originally going to be set in Belgium like Secret Army was, but the French were funnier than the Belgians!

And that is why elephants paint their toenails pink, and hide in cherry trees.

have you ever seen a pink-toenailed elephant hiding in a cherry tree? No?  Rather proves the point....

...and that's why cobras have flat heads, they didn't see them either, just before the elephants decided to come down.

That reminds me of this one

Sergeant-Major to corporal "I didn't see you at camouflage instruction corporal."

Corporal "Thank you Sergeant-Major."

An army mate of mine was sent on a course at camouflage school.

He failed because he couldn't find it.

Of course, none of 'Allo 'Allo was actually filmed in France.

Many of the exterior scenes (i.e. the town square) were filmed in the courtyard of Lynford Hall in Norfolk. The Hall had previously appeared in the Dad's Army episode "Wake up Walmington".

Ah, the days when the BBC knew they had a budget and stuck to it!

Indeed - David Croft recounts in the book "Dad's Army: The Lost Episodes" of some of the shortcuts that had to be taken in order to meet the budget.

In particular, in the episode "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Walker", Mainwaring and Wilson are forced to spend a night sheltering in a London Underground station. Croft had wanted a large set stuffed with extras to really convey the atmosphere of a WW2 Tube station shelter, but instead had to make do with a piece of card with a London Underground roundel on it behind the actors.

When the episode was re-made for GOLD, the budget wouldn't even run to that as GOLD couldn't afford the licensing for the roundel!

Which is a shame, as it would have been nice if that scene could have been filmed at Aldwych to give it the detail Croft originally intended.

Haven't we gone all poetic.  Here's something I was moved to pen recently -

Surfers grin from ear to ear when they are surfing.
Skiers smile as they are schussing down the course.
When people go out riding there is no way they'll be hiding
The delight they feel from sitting on a horse.
SCUBA divers take their pleasure underwater.
(Though they save their smiles for when they're back on land).
And a mountain-biker buddy's only happy when he's muddy.
After riding he will tell you "It was grand!"
There are just so many sports that bring elation.
Extreme ones that will leave you with a high.
These forms of exercising will get the spirits rising
But there's one sport that just makes me wonder "Why?"

'Cos...

I never saw a smiling jogger.
I never saw a jogger with a grin.
When they're going through their paces see the strain upon their faces.
Yes, joggers are all miserable as sin.
I never saw a smiling jogger.
I never saw a jogger having fun.
When kilomet'ring and mile-ing you just won't see any smiling
And I wonder why the moody b*ggers run.

Maybe joggers exercise 'cos it's a penance.
Maybe joggers run 'cos they need to atone
For their sins and past transgressions, and through all their running sessions
They get closer to Redemption with each groan.
So they don their running shoes and hit the pavement.
Each step they take just wears away the sin.
As they put the miles behind them they hope one day that you'll find them
With Saint Peter saying "Welcome, come on in."

So...

I never saw a smiling jogger.
But I think the reason why they run is this.
When they're out "No pain, no gain"-ing you won't hear any complaining
They're just hoping to achieve Eternal Bliss.
I never saw a smiling jogger.
As they grit their teeth through each and every mile.
It's all pain and perspiration on the road to their Salvation.
But I do wish that the gloomy s0ds would smile
