Apparently that would be deemed a suitable answer. It's just to see if you can think quickly. Loads of people either freeze, take too long to answer or argue that it's a daft question.

I have always suggested to Swmbo that adopting an elephant would be a good idea think of all the shopping it would carry ,useful on the school run and you could use it to water the garden the list of possibilities is endless

This was in the 1990s. Like those tiny ponies that were popular. Then someone else had the same idea on the radio programme Genius.... Now, if it was a university interview question, the interviewer would be looking for a candidate who could challenge the assumptions underlying the question. That's the last thing a job interviewer wants from a candidate. The purpose of a university education is to create good electors but unemployable workers. 2

Popular Post NorthBrit
Nelly the Elephant has come down with Covid 19. "Where did you get it from?" she was asked. She replied "TRUMP. TRUMP' TRUMP." 2

But you are looking for people who can think rather that just answer simple questions. Everyone can answer the "Why do you want to work here?" type of question as they have rehearsed it. If you throw something a bit weird in then they haven't just learnt the interview questions from a book and used set answers. It's also a bit of psychology. Asking someone what type of animal they see themselves and why can be revealing. If you say cat and say "because a cat sleeps all day doing nothing" isn't very suitable if you want a member of staff who's alert. You are looking for more tigers, sharks and dogs than tortoises. 2
Wacol
Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywod and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils.

A variation of that joke is at least as old as the film "Master & Commander - the Far Side of The World" - set two centuries ago....

Or any of the funny ones such as "what would you do if I gave you an elephant, but you can't sell it or give it away?" I had the elephant one a number of years ago. The interviewer said "I have to ask some stupid questions". I answered I'd rent it out to a circus for peanuts. (not selling or giving away) We laughed, I got the job, and been here for 10 1/2 years.

I was once asked "If you were a car, what type would you be and why?" My answer - a Toyota Landcruiser, because they can take a lot of hard knocks and still be reliable. There were a couple of answers I avoided - one was 1971 MG (which I owned at the time) because it was hard to get going on cold mornings. The other answer I avoided was "That's a really stupid question " I wish I'd said it now - I didn't get the job anyway.
