This is my take of a Victorian clock tower which neatly fills a corner of the layout

It was nearly finished except for the copper dome and it's verdigris.

Was in a local town at the weekend and popped into Games Workshop and came out with a pot of Citadel Technical NIHILAKH OXIDE for £2:50 whichis for doing verdigris on copper.

I gave the cap a coat of Tamiya XF-6 Copper first and then applied two coats on the new paint, very pleased with the result

Been working for months on getting this and other houses cast in plaster and painted correctly so they can be replicated. Now I'm almost there, with the windows being created by laser cutting somewhere in London.

Completely scratchbuilt.

Well, you asked for it, herewith pictures of my version of Aherns Cottage Row....

Yup, all card save the glazing and the dog kennel fences. Scalescenes texture papers, down-pipes are florists wire/solder with tiny wraps of paper for brackets, gutters are scraped toothpick and BBQ skewers, flowers are grated crayon.

Really lovely work there Doug, full of atmosphere and character and all carefully thought out.

Terrific stuff mate, like to see some more of your work.

Cheers.

Allan.

Hi Doug, this is extraordinary I think, even for this thread. Apart from the modelling itself, what I like is the careful composition of everything, and how the vegetation softens up the straight lines of the buildings. Did you plan everything from the outset or did it develop gradually?

Thank you for your kind remarks, Mikkel, I built the model from the drawings below in J Ahern's Miniature Building Construction for the challenge of the 'eyebrow' dormer, as he gave no hints as to how it could be done. I had not intended to add the garden areas, but SWMBO asked me to do so. As I was angling for a steak and kidney pudding that week, I agreed!

This is how I work up the drawings

post-106-0-05701900-1425112470.jpg

Here is how I tackled the eyebrow dormer, I had to cut it from the centre of a larger piece to stop it tearing, then work that into the roof outline. I covered it with stretched watercolour paper printed  [scalescenes 'Old Tile'] with Epson 'DuraBrite' inks, alternately wetting and stretching it as I did so over a couple of days, holding each stretch in place with pegs.  It speaks voloumes for the quality and water-fastness of Epson inks, and Daler-Rowney 140gm watercolour paper.

Eventually I found it could be done in one piece instead of trying to join two pieces.

Of course, like a kid, once I started I didn't want to stop, so the shepherd's cottage got some detailing

Finally, SWMBO said that the bay window needed a plant in a pot. 'What sort of plant?'...She got a Sansaveria [sp?] i.e. 'Mother-in-Laws Tongue'!

Hi Doug.

You might like to try Slaters beer barrels for plant tubs. They are hollow and come in two halves in both 4mm and 7mm.

As I said before, really inspiring work and I recognised it as a  John Ahearn Madder Valley building as I once had a go at it myself when I first started out but mine ended up in the bin !

Cheers.

Allan

Ah, so that's where all the credit should go! :jester:

But seriously, I think you deserve that pudding. That is some very clever work on the eyebrow dormer. Just spotted the axe and wood - excellent!
