Some lovely cars in that - some faintly ridiculous ones too!

 

Funnily enough, SWMBO was watching Sports Personality tonight,of which I have absolutely no interest, so I wiled away the hours watching Mk1 & 2 Escort videos on Youtube. Which led to the usual futile speculation of if I sell all my modelling stuff could I raise enough to buy one again. Unfortunately I keep coming up about 20 grand short...!! :no:

Super 25 minutes of my life watching those videos.   I really liked the SAAB 96s....all being driven exactly as they ought to.....foot absolutely flat to the floor, and leave the chassis to cope.  Sage advice from a Scots acquaintance who is a 96 exponent.  [Can the clang of the gas pedal being smacked into the floorpan be heard in the 2 stroke 96 bit?]..............and, of course, the Mustang?    Was the Mini stuck in 3rd gear, perhaps?   Volvo 340 too..a very under-rated motor, full of potential, once the reputation as been got past.

I was unfortunate enough to have owned a DAF when Volvo took the company over and rebadged it.

 

I only had it for one day when a massive pool of oil formed underneath the engine bay onto the driveway. To be fair, the dealer took it back and I bought a VOLVO 240 estate instead. Well enough built, no sudden oils strikes in the driveway, solid, absolutely reliable but totally boring to own and to drive. Enentually,I got rid of it for a Citroen DS Pallas - a different car altogether in every way possible. Wish I still had it and, If they built them again today, I wouldn't even look at another Merc, let alone own one.

Didn't get the chance to stop for a photo but I saw a beautiful '67 Mustang Notchback outside one of our local body shops this morning, in gleaming dark red with 'Bullitt' five spoke alloys it looked a peach.

My late wife bought me a Toyota Celica when they first came out.

 

17 grand bought pop up headlights, 2 litre engine, two tone blue metallic, 0-60 in 7 seconds, won sports car of the year award, drove as if it was on rails but not in Scotland where I ditched it when having a burn up with a Volvo Estate. Hit a hairpin far too fast although the Volvo made it and the driver even helped me and the missus - not the car, a tractor took care off both that and the front bumper - out of the ditch exclaiming that he had thought about buying one for his wife but I had changed his mind !

Didn't make a claim, just parcel taped the bumper back on and blamed it all on my wife for wearing such a short skirt in times of crisis. Nyloned knees and hair pin bends a dangerous though excitable combination!

Funnily theres a Volvo 340 thread going on another forum, as an ex owner of an '89 plater mine was as solid and reliable as you'd expect, it was the early cars immediatley after the Volvo takeover of Daf which were flakey . Agree about the Saab 96 goes and sounds like scolded wasp!

In my experience with Renault cars, they've never made a good one yet and as for the old Renault Fuego I once bought secondhand with the glove compartment full of bits that had fell off the interior - including the glove compartment handle itself - you couldn't pay me enough to own one again and, to think, Volvo of all people, used their bloody engines !

Seems like DfT [DOT, MoT, whatever].....have finally issued the long-awaited rules surrounding VHI's, MoT,s  modified vehicles, etc.

Now, I'm not sure of the veracity of the information, coming as it does from a press source....but.....nothing 'new' in my personal view, regarding VHIs, MoTs, and modifications permitted, still retaining VHI status.

 

However, undergoing an Mot is optional, and can still be done.  Even claiming VHI status is optional, if one does not wish to. If one's modifications preclude VHI status [V8 in a Morris Minor, for example?]...all that in effect means, is one has to get an MoT every year..one can still claim zero VED.

 

Of interest to me particularly is, vehicles [cars, not bikes!!] on a Q-plate [vehicle of indeterminate origin]...can claim VHI status 40 years after registration.  Which is a quantum leap forwards compared to what went before. [when Q-pates could not take advantage of the 40 year zero VED thing.].......Thus, my Cannon has but 19 years to go before I don't need to pay tax on it!!!.

[This should please owners of older kit cars, for example?]

 

So far, I have been unable to find the Official word on the matter.

The Fuego was designed by Robert Opron, the same man who gave us the CX, GS, SM and the facelifted DS.....

Well, when I bought mine I had enough loose parts that had fallen off to build anyone of those mentioned cars.Possibly, Opron was on drugs when he designed my Fuego...

Mate of mine had a Fuego and it was very smart looking.  He never had any problems with it at all.........................................................apart from his wife tried to run him down with it after he got caught out!  Don't think you can blame Renault for that.
