I enjoyed our two Maxis - both of them ended their long sensible lives nobly enduring cold dark winters outside our house..

dh

As you can see this one is still around - or was at the beginning of the year - but as it looks well cared for I expect it still is running.

No photos alas but saw a couple of rarities whilst following the Warwickshire lanes this morning - a gorgeous D-Type Jag replica in the obligatory British Racing Green, and a black Lamborghini Silhouette / Jalpa which appeared to have broken down just outside Stratford.

Even quite new Mazda MX5 s are known to rust out from the sills.

I know this only too well. The even greater issue is the front chassis rails rusting out on the Mk2 and Mk2.5. The owners club tried to get a recall so folks like me could have their cars repaired for free under warranty. No such luck. It's a real shame as the car is fabulous in so many other respects.

Top Gear once did a feature on the greatest British sportscar and (ho ho!) the MX5 won the title. And just like many other great British sportscars they rust.

Oddly I remember a pal had a very quick Essie exactly that colour in the 80's - is that a standard scheme?

Don't think so. IIRC the vast majority of Twin Cams were (Ermine?) white & there's a sole (known anyway) survivor in a pale metallic blue. My factory standard Mk1 Escort book has gone missing in action at the moment so I can't check properly...

I'm kind of thinking it is the same car....it was a serious bit of kit when I got a ride in it.  Awful colours....

This pic is the first time I have ever noticed how the ground-breaking original AH 100/4 wears an expanded version of that Healey Silverstone's grille.

There are some stunning cars in that field...!! I'll have the Cortina please. Back when petrol was affordable, a back street car dealer local to me often had some lovely cars in. One day there was a gorgeous duck egg greenish colour Mk2 Lotus 'tina on his forecourt. I fell in love with it instantly. He agreed a good deal for my Escort Mexico, everything was set - and I couldn't afford the insurance...!! Fate must have decreed I was never to own anything Lotus, the same thing later happened with a cracking little Europa I wanted.....

I don't see it. Which photo?

The very last one of the 1926 Vauxhall 14/40. Lurking behind it is what looks like a red Avanti.

Incidentally, that photo of the Triumph Stag suggests that the owner has installed the side marker / front indicator clusters the wrong way round.  :jester:

Not an Avanti - they had a thick pillar that foreshadowed that on the Jensen Vignale. I wonder if it might be a Ferrari or a special by Ghia (before they became a trim level).

I see Pete has said much the same while I was typing.

Who is the body designer/builder of that very elegant 1965 2.3 Fiat coupe - is that a Farina badge low down behind the front wheel?

I recall a Parisian friend with a good looking big Peugeot Farina coupe around that time.

Possibly a 404 - the 404 saloon looked very similar to the A55/A60 Austin Cambridge, maybe not surprising given that Pininfarina had a hand in both.

According to Wikipedia it was Ghia (which is what I suspected). Pininfarina did do some prototypes, but they looked very different.
