About twenty five years ago I helped a friend of mine rebuild an accident damaged BX estate. We pretty much replaced the entire drivers side of the body. Although to my eyes it was clearly designed using Lego compared to the classic Citroen's and the interior was the post 1980 standard sea of depressing grey plastic, I enjoyed sorting out the brakes and suspension and found that the construction was really very simple and logical and it took very little effort to conduct a major repair.

Once painted and reassembled it was great to drive, provided that you didn't catch your reflection in shop windows. :jester:

One company that I worked for when I was in my 20s had XM Citroen's as fleet cars as replacement for Montego Clubman estates. They looked more like a "proper" Citroen and were wonderful to drive. They seemed to be dogged with problems unfortunately, but even so it was sad day when they were replaced with wide mouth frog Granada's, which were just awful. The only vaguely stylish touch was the knock off Lincoln Continental full width tail light which seemed wasted on them.

I meant to ask earlier Jon - are the earlier Spider wheels which will take the hub caps easy to find....?

The John Tipler book is on its way, along with a couple of others on the Spiders ;)

I had to hunt for a set of used ones but  it wasn't that difficult, they'll be more commonly listed/ described as 1750 or Bertone saloon wheels.-  there was a run of modern production ones about 10 years ago, but I was told the machinery/tooling for them broke :(  I got my set refurbished by Lepsons and they make them look better than new. The hub caps themselves are still produced 'new' sporadically and are quite reasonably priced.

I've found a few more pictures that may be of interest, especially as there's been a few posts on Soviet era cars. In 2019 I visited a vehicle museum in Vladivostok and here are a couple of pictures. I haven't a clue what they are but have got many more if anyone wants them posting. RobertDSC_1070.JPG.a11e72e6de9e3a019ed46c56c235b513.JPGDSC_1055.JPG.2fcb03ae47288c0b73d75c217aa28710.JPG

Zil, Zis and Zim, always good cars to know about when playing car alphabets at junior school!

Mike.

If you ever get chance to play again, you can throw in Zastava and Zaporozhyets.

The "UNLOVED SOVIET SOCIALIST REGISTER" are the Car Club to be in.  Some of the weird and wonderful vehicles their members have acquired between them - and saved from obscurity, certainly in Western Europe - is impressive.

I assure you it was CX estate, Did loads of work on it about 2 years ago, including fitting A/C, fancy sound system, top of the range remote start alarm etc.

Thanks Jon. I've been looking at Alfaholics Spider parts, most of the smaller items seem quite reasonably priced and not that much more expensive than the equivalent Mini items. One of the Series 2 Spiders I've got my eye on could do with some new interior and exterior shiny bits, so it's nice to know a lot of it is still available.

I looked the register up. Its a shame that the Tatra was only available in LHD and conversion to RHD* made them too expensive. * Ironic as Hitler forced a change in the rule of the road they would have been RHD.

On a similar sort of vein I came across this at the bottom of a YouTube rabbit-hole

Wonderfully evil looking old thing , along the same lines as the old Gaz Chaika. Love it.

Good news on the Mini front, my Mini 30 now has a fresh MOT and only failed on the emissions and screen washer. It's provisionally sold so the new owner will be pleased, but he can't come and collect it until the lockdown ends, he wanted to come over at the weekend but apparently the local rozzers have been stopping people in his area (Ipswich).

Very relieved that the Mini passed the test, I was expecting a large bill!

How did it get through with failed emissions test? Or more likely what was the fix?

I should have said it failed on the emissions and was then fixed, sorry! Not sure what he actually did to fix it, he may have threatened it with a Mr.Bean style lime green respray or something equally vile....!

I'm just glad it got through with no adviseries, as is the buyer ;)

Talking of Italians..... another Alfa Romeo book has mysteriously appeared as if from nowhere, a late arrival Christmas present I wasn't aware of! It's a collection of Alfa Spider brochure reprints from 1955 to 1986 in a mix of English, Italian and German, full of joyous Euro chic  so it is....
