All true, but it's also the case that, at lower levels, even less substantially modified Escorts were still going pretty quickly in all sorts of events. Quickly enough that I doubt if Ford could have justified the cost of an upgrade to the range as a whole. The Escort was, after all, a cheapish family saloon that also happened to be the basis for a useful competition car. In economic terms its rivals were not what it was up against in motorsports but against its competitors for mass sales, and in that field the writing was very much on the wall for RWD by 1980. Why spend development money on an upgrade with likely marginal results, on a platform that was reaching the end of its economic life anyway?

Two or three BR universal point clips in the boot made the Mk 1  Escort handle much better (but I don't think carrying a dozen or so detonators as well made much difference to the performance).

Only if some idiot crashes into the boot. :jester:

Just scanning some old negs and found this pic' taken in a car park at Warrington in the '90's. I read somewhere ages ago that these were based on the Suzuki Supercarry/Bedford Rascal van chassis, but i can't confirm it. Interesting to see the reversed '50' stickers in the window...is that the max speed? or just its total length in inches. :D Wonder if they still exist and use them?

At first I thought it was one of the Outspan Orange ones that were based on Mini mechanicals. Obviously when you look at it it is not.

Sorry no pics but spotted in Tess Coes car park this morning a Riley RM. Not sure of what size engine it had but the badge was blue if that gives anyone a clue. In very good condition but best described as used often.

All Riley RMs had blue badges; dark blue for the 1 1/2 litre and light blue for the 2 1/2 litre.  The latter is also longer.

The one pictured is currently on SORN and was last MOT'd in 2007 (expired 2008). At least three were built and they were a Bedford Rascal underneath. The headlights are from a Citroen 2CV. They used to be kept at Bourneville, I understand they may still be at Cadburys World.

Thanks, it was dark blue so therefore a 1.5 litre. I thought it was the smaller model because of the shorter bonnet but I wasn't 100% certain.

The Mini Outspan car would be this one:

edit to add 6 were built and one is at Beaulieu. A second one is known to be in South Africa. Limited to 30mph because they were so unstable.

It's not exactly the latest news, as it was just over three weeks ago, but the Wolseley Car Club of NSW held their annual concours last month at Linnwood House, a historic home in western Sydney, in conjunction with an open day at the house, and displays by a number of other car clubs.  I'll post some photos of the other cars later, but here's a selection of Wolseleys (plus one Austin, whose owners are members of the Wolseley club):

Apologies in advance but to paraphrase the famous, er, phrase - 'lots of trouble usually.... oh my good gawd what the bloomin' Nora have I got myself into'  ;)

Your photo hasn't put me off in the slightest though Steve, I still want a Lotus, sadly the S2 I looked at a few months ago sold while I was procrastinating for England.

The S2 is a bit simpler electrics wise as it uses readily available Lucas flick switches and most of the other stuff is shared with Triumphs of the same era.

The so called safety switch style rockers are impossible to get hold of now and there is lots more gadgetry fitted!

The most challenging is the +2S which is a pretty complex vehicle electrics wise.
