RMweb Gold russ p Posted August 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 23, 2017 But extremely scary on corners! My unmodified one was nice and quick in a straight line, but I needed to do a quick bit of double de-clutching to get out of fifth gear when approaching corners, especially if I knew there were potholes that would try to throw the car across to the other side of the road . Hydragas or hydralastic can be made to handle well I have an MGf and a metro turbo and both handle fantastically

Owd Bob
I was lucky to help out in the making of the telly show 'Life on Mars' when it was being filmed, unbelievably it's over ten years ago now!
BG John
I always thought most Allegros were pretty bland and boring looking, but the 1750 Sport had a bit of something extra that I quite liked.

RMweb Gold russ p Posted August 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 23, 2017 The life on Mars allegros aren't what they seem the one with PFV reg is a mk2 which didn't come out until 75 ,I seem to remember an allegro 3 in the series also with an L reg plate. The most distinctive allegro has to be the equipe which came out in 79 a two door 1750tc with alloys and sports trim and virtually all of them were silver with red and Orange starsky and hutch stripes! They were mk2s but had black bumpers and the front spoiler from the allegro 3. Very few have survived
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted August 23, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 23, 2017 I had a 1980 (V reg) Allegro estate that could be described as a Mk. 2.5. It had the Mk. 2 chrome bumpers and exterior trim but some of the mechanical features and interior trim were Mk. 3.

Dunlop SP Sports. Great in the wet. Even more fun once the tread had worn down to stop "scooting". but then maybe the Ex. Met Police chief could convince you that the Goodyear "made a major contribution to road safety". Edited August 23, 2017 by Porcy Mane

Very few have survived PFV was a 'P' reg' you can just see the bright White tape over the top bit of the letter 'P', the bit of the letter 'L' at the bottom was a piece of Black insulation tape that car was a right shed and a death trap to drive, no brakes and the suspension was held up on all corners with wooden blocks, it was sold on e-bay for three hundred quid after the series finished with the advice that it was spares only, but i believe it was fully restored down in Milton Keynes. The other UKX was its proper number and was the second ever off the production line i was told, with the first ever built Allegro going to Austrailia, it was originally a minter and in a Roman Bronze colour, and can be seen in the first few eps' parked up outside the Police station, its colour clashed with the Cortina which had to be the star of the show and a Panda was needed so it got resprayed early on, this was a very nice car to drive and my Wife always loved driving that one. The third was a White one again a fake 'L' reg plated one and the one you are thinking of Russ, this was also a nice car but half the dash came out when you pulled the choke knob out this was later resprayed into a horrible modena Green. Of course non of the Panda's were ever right as most real Panda cars in the '70's were only two door. Edited August 23, 2017 by Owd Bob
RMweb Gold russ p Posted August 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 23, 2017 It was a bit strange wantIng lots of allegros for a show set in 1973 when the car was only introduced that year. L plate allegros were very rare anyway
Porcy Mane
Aaaah. 1973. For some it was a good year. (No tyre preference inferred). For others, not so good. P

peanuts
105bhp not to bad 10bhp more than the later HL, 7000rpm wouldn't think it would stand that too often there is a risk of turning a cam bucket over on these engines at that speed, seen it a few times on the later O series. Would like to know what an E series does with the twin 40DCNF Webber's from the later but similar R series from the early MG Maestro Shame they didn't give it minilites not start in hot weather due to heatsoak vaporosing the fuel in the carb .mate had an early MGmeastro with the 1600 and was a nightmare when hot to restart only cured by binning the oem air filter and replacing with an itg foam filter to let the heat out
runs as required
Can someone please enlighten me on those Inspector Montelbano Fiat boxy saloons ? The actors always look different - Old & Young M, and Mimo etc., but to the untutored eye the Inspector's cars all look like the same sort of Fiat Tipo of the late 90s early 2000s. In the latest, last night, there were obviously much newer estate cars on view in the Scicli street scenes, but the dottore's cars still looked the same. Help ! dh

runs as required
Fiat Tempra? Very rare in Britain too. Thanks for the suggestion. But the Tempra has a boot projection, the Inspector's all seem to be bootless hatchbacks. They are also supposed to be about 20 odd years apart just like Old and Young Montelbano; it doesn't seem to stack up. dh
£1.38
Its definitely a Fiat Tipo

For those who are interested a full repeat of the first series of 'Life On Mars' begins this evening on the Drama Channel. 2.I saw a Gilbern in traffic locally the other day, unable to take a pic as it was heading in one direction and I was driving in the opposite direction
