Hope he had lay up insurance for it. I still haven't arranged any for the Min. One of my main worries is the garage catching fire, even though I had the electrics out there sorted last year. Must sort some out in the New Year....

think they are the extra wide ones used on the rally cars maybe one of the 400 off shells to get through homologation at the time for group 4 rallying

 

I believe the pattern for them was the rear arches of a twin wheel transit

They're steel RS bubble arches. Available from any RS dealer at the time, & detailed instructions on how to fit them properly could be found in the Escort rally preparation bible published by Boreham. 

 

Or you could do it the 'clubman' way by buying cheap fibreglass copies & bodging them on with pop rivets & filler.

 

I'm not admitting to what I usually chose to do...

How's this for good timing - just nipped out the front door to top up the screen wash in the Alfa and a 1983 Porsche 911 Turbo trundled past, lovely! Too quick to grab a photo but in guard's red with black and silver Fuch alloys it looked a treat. Sounded nice too... :good:

right was mulling this one over today after seing so many lovely old cars on this thread how many of the current crop of everyday cars outside of those used for competition will still be running in 20 - 30 years time especialy the diesels ? or will there very disposability be there down fall ?

If a modern car developes a serious fault it invariably ends up in a scrapyard. I've known cars only four years old be scrapped because of a fault.

All the mark 1 Fiat Puntos will end up being scrapped because of failure of the power steering motors which means a complete new steering column, brilliant design that!

If you can find / afford the correct diagnostic kit then keeping a 'modern' running in twenty or thirty years time may be feasible. Mind you, I dare say some classic specialists are already on the case in this regard.

 

One specific example springs to mind - the Maserati 3200 Coupe has a drive by wire throttle set up, to replace the part will cost you around £2k direct from Maserati, but there is a chap who works from home who will refurbish your existing one for about £400. I believe he is still the only independent Maser specialist currently offering this service.

 

For now I'll stick with '60s and '70s Minis!
