Oops! Makes me cringe watching this.

This is a strop parting at the end nearest the camera. Usually a proper shipping company will insist on an adequate cradle with lifting eyes so this cant happen.

This sort of thing is caused by sharp edges which put an unfair strain on the strop at the sharp turn. SWL figures and even breaking strains are completely negated by this sort of abuse. Even a knot in a rope reduces its breaking strain by 50%. A knick or a kink will have the same or even worse effect.

I am sure we have all at some point in time dropped a brand new completed model. Apparently this also happens on the prototype. Found this by accident.

Good illustration of why not to walk under slung loads. Do they make tubes of superglue large enough to repair this?

It was Owendo, Gabon last November.

A similar fate awaited 70012 when it was being unloaded from the MV Beluga Endurance at Newport early in January 2011 though apparently it was dropped back into the hold rather than onto the dockside. That was being unloaded by the ship's own crane and from the video so it appears was the loco in Gabon.
