On 25th July 2024 GBRf 66734* PLATINUM JUBILEE, getting a tow from 69001, on 0E02 Tuebrook Sidings to Doncaster Roberts Road Shed. Sitting alongside the Severn Beach line, 66068 is waiting to push its train of FCA flats loaded with London's refuse back into the Severnside energy from waste centre. The working is 6C03 Northolt - Severnside. Making the most of the opportunity of the long evenings this time of year, it is still almost light as 66101 is seen in Exeter Riverside at the head of 6M53 to Cliffe Vale. 66244 sits on Reception 1 in Acton Yard having worked up on the front of 6M47 from Westbury. The train would layover here for a few hours before going forward to Cricklewood. The Mendip Rail wagons are loaded in Whatley and bring the Somerset aggregate to London for use in the construction industry. 66244 is one of the 10 locos returned from France by DB Cargo, and was in fine form while working this train. What is believed to be the last 66 to retain DB Schenker branding, 66101 sits down the Salisbury spur at Westbury waiting its next move. 6V31 from Eastleigh was about to arrive and long enough to require shunt releasing, so 66101 was used to pull the traffic off. The loco had come up earlier in the evening after a long spell outbased at St Blazey, and worked 6M47 to Acton as the first leg of its trip to Toton for exam. Will the Schenker stickers be peeled off while it's there? Update - yes, Toton have removed the Schenker branding, believed to be in connection with DB selling the Schenker logistics business (nothing to do with rail freight), removing the branding to ensure there's no confusion. On the hottest day of the year so far, no that's not a mirage, it really is water! The puddle, presumably caused from damping down product to reduce dust, reflects the cloudless blue sky. 66192, which has recently been fitted with the new LED headlights, is seen in Acton Yard waiting time atop 6V10 to Westbury. I was glad to have No. 1 end leading in this heat. The tall building to the left is One West Point in North Acton, apparently the tallest residential building outside Canary Wharf. It is construction of structures like this that drives London's demand for aggregate from other parts of the country. A loco that spends most of its time in the northern parts of the country due to its customer livery, 66109 'Teesport Express' has had a little holiday based off Acton lately. It has gained Thornaby Kingfishers on the No. 1 end cabs as well as depot stickers, so is clearly a bit of a Tees Yard pet loco. It is seen in Acton Yard, shortly after arriving with 6V06 from Burton on Trent West Yard Maurice Hill Siding, having brought the empty wagons back for a refill of HS2 spoil. Heading west along the Calder Valley towards Brighouse on 7th August 2024 with 6M37, Arcow Quarry to Pendleton in Greater Manchester, loaded aggregate hoppers. Halvarras Posted August 12 Share Posted August 12 It has already been a year since the CDA wagons made their last china clay delivery to Fowey Docks, on 11th August 2023. The train ran from Treviscoe on the Parkandillack branch. The loco in charge of the final couple of weeks' workings was 66199 in full EWS livery, without DB branding. Seen here approaching Middleway Crossing with the final load from Rocks Driers on the Newquay branch the previous day: As noted above re 66101, Class 66s on the clays tend to stick around for weeks and during that time are always photographed by somebody, with pics posted on the Cornwall Railway Society website, so I can state with some confidence that to date 66199 has been the last one to appear down here still in EWS livery (which had already become scarce so I do wonder whether its selection was a nostalgic nod to 20 years plus of EWS 66s on the CDAs and not just a coincidence). However it begs the question - how many 66s are still in EWS maroon & gold livery? I saw a recent photo of 66083 still EWS so I'm sure there are a few survivors about....? Jo Thanks Jo, that's the kind of figure I was expecting. So it's still possible that 66199 won't be the last seen down here in EWS colours, although I suspect DBC prefer to send recently-overhauled locos to this far-flung outpost of Class 66 operation for reliability reasons - so many of them which have turned up lately seem to be in the condition displayed by 66025. The apparently now rapid repainting of the fleet is another reason for asking the question. Along with the two blue Class 150/2 units still in circulation (which don't blend into the vegetation in photos....) it's something else to look out for! 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The red repaints aren't overhauled, so don't read too much into a shiny coat of paint. 66101 that was down recently was the second or third red repaint, and that dates from 2010. It went to Toton for exam after its stint in Cornwall. Class 66s don't have traditional overhauls in the BR sense, components are exchanged as required. An example is the engine, to change a piston you remove a power pack, essentially a piston and cylinder in a removable module, reducing downtime and allowing parts to be replaced without stripping the whole engine down.
