Peter Kazmierczak
Jo at the wheel of 66083 on a down to up side move at Westbury. The departing Penance IET shouldn't have been there; scheduled to use the avoiding line. However, it was diverted to call at the station as the previous Plymouth service had been cancelled.

Hi, The P-Way staff and I were on site during the process and I had exactly the same question. The P-Way found it highly amusing that the rerailing team were only able to move it up or down and weren't using the lateral beam thingy. I can't honestly remember how they did it in the end, but I certainly don't remember any lateral beam being used. I know they managed it in the end as I then prepped the Loco and drove it back onto Hither Green shed. Thanks, Shed. 4

Peter Kazmierczak
What happens when you keep buying too many locos for the layout... A 66/4, a 66/5, a 59/0 and two 59/2s in this shot at Whatley yesterday. 11 1

It needs fixing or wedging against something at one end, and is then used to push the loco over at the other end. Not easy to do really. The last shot seems to show the wheelsets resting on metal plates, so lift, place plates under, then slide over basically. The problem with lifting like that is that you have to lift high enough to compensate for the suspension preload, like changing a wheel on a car, quite a way. We once got called to Guiness Park Royal, one of their 08s was off the rails. Turned out the front and rear wheels were off, with the centre still on and over pointwork. A case of trying to secure the middle wheels to the rails, lift one end and drop onto packing, then lift the other end and drop onto packing, followed by a swivel with the kick jack and drop it back onto the rails. All done with a Bruff rather than fetch the crane out.

Interesting to see the move from the other side too! That IET explains why I got routed out the north. Then had to wait behind W198 for units to shuffle about. Around 15 minutes after that was taken we were in the yard: An ever declining number of locos retain EWS maroon and gold, so to have 3 together was too good to resist. 66121 has been DB stickered, but 66068 and 66083 retain full EWS branding. Seen in Westbury Up Yard, 068 would lead 083 on 0V14 to Margam later in the evening. Jo

Peter Kazmierczak
One last question Jo; which signal did you reverse at, at the north end of Westbury? Or did you go into Tarmac to reverse? Thanks.

The left hand one viewed from here, with 4 feathers on it. https://flic.kr/p/2mgxfRv As a rule only FL go in the cement works. We can also use the Trowbridge siding (W724) or W722 on the main line too. Jo

Arun Sharma
Lurking around the newish station at Barking Riverside yesterday, I stopped off at Leyton Midland Road around 1600. Two 66s within a few minutes of each other passed through - one with a train of JHA and the other with a mixture of Tesco containers on ICD and IDA flats. Both engines named.
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted June 29 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 29 (edited) I had another of my occasional jaunts to Eastleigh yesterday, just a couple of hours in the afternoon. Not vast amounts to see, but there was some action... 66044 gets to grips with the 4O21 09:20 Trafford Park Euro Terminal - Southampton Western Docks from platform 3. 66098 pauses at platform 1 for a crew change with the 4E68 15:48 Southampton Western Docks - Wakefield Europort service. 66171 with the 6O42 11:31 Halewood (Jaguar Cars) - Southampton Eastern Docks. Three Colas 66s (66846, 66850, 66848) share yard space with resident shunters 08511 (to the right) and 08683 (partially obscured). The 69 lurking in the background is 69004. Notable exceptions? Well, although my visit was only a couple of hours, not a single Freightliner 66 put in an appearance. Edited July 16 by Claude_Dreyfus
