Unless you know about military aircraft it makes no sense at all. I think they should do a more attractive plane next, like the typhoon.

RMweb Gold 4630 Posted August 15, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2017 (edited) 66708 'Jayne' on 15th August 2017 passing Ravensthorpe with the rarity of a loaded coal train destined for a power station. 6M17, 09.11 Redcar Bulk Terminal to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station, Warrington. Apparently this is a trial working in the schedule this week MTuWThFO. http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/R00663/2017/08/15/advanced Edited to add the working is also now scheduled for Th this week. AberdeenBill
Hi all, How many random things can you get apparently sticking up from a loco roof? How about four My only excuse is that the train (644J Elgin to Millerhill loaded ballast spoil) was running early and I was dawdling and I only just caught it at Dyce station. But it does pose a couple of questions. Why does ballast get so filthy? It looked like mud sludge in the wagons... Will the ballast be cleaned and reused or will it be dumped? The Elgin track renewals have been continuing on and off for a few months now. So far as I know, up to last week, all trains were worked by EWS/DB(S) 66s, then we had a Colas 60+56 pairing on 13 August and today we see a pair of DRS 66s (66 430 and 66 424). Do these companies bid to work individual trains in advance of the works, or are locos from different operating companies assigned at short notice according to availability etc.? Thanks, Bill

Thanks, Bill It may be that the company operating the train cannot source the locos and then hire in from another FOC - driver familiarity permitting of course.. Reading Big Jim's Colas thread, he's driven locos from other companies on Colas jobs. It may also be an issue of sourcing crew as well as locos. One of the long term jobs near me had Freightliner locos and crews during the week and EWS locos/crews at the weekends. This went on for about 6 weeks. Do these companies bid to work individual trains in advance of the works, or are locos from different operating companies assigned at short notice according to availability etc.? Thanks, Bill The ballast gets filthy for various reasons:- mechanical breakdown of the ballast itself produces 'fines' of powdered stone. Clay 'pumping' up from the formation. The toilets of trains not fitted with retention tanks discharging over the top. Brake dust and oil from passing trains. Used ballast these days is usually 'screened' to remove smaller particles, then sold as 'sub-base'. Normally, this is in small batches to local contractors, but there was a case in East Anglia where the quantities were large enough to justify block trainloads.
