Talltim
I've been given one of these http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATH5463 Now looking at the real BAR reefers http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=64075 in the number range It's obviously a stand in, with a correct ish roof profile, similar door and ribs, but no mechanical refridgeration unit! Later releases have the generator. Is the model as it stands a representation of anything else?
JWB
Which do you feel doesn't have the mechanical refrigeration unit? I think this one is fairly close, because the BAR tended to get reefers off PFE runs and leased them to PFE outside the potato season. I believe this is an OK representation of a PFE car, and it looks close for the BAR as well. The mechanical refrigeration is the screening or set of vents in the lower corner of the A end, I believe. Talltim
The athearn model doesn't seem to have either any representation of the generator behind the ladder at one end and also does t have the grills in the upper body side at that end. The version released in 2009 does http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATH71189 Β Edit: actually. the more I look, the more it does look like it is supposed to be that prototype, just missing those details and with some spurious extra steps along the bottom of the sill
highpeak
I think this thread is talking about the same model: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,448176 Here is an end view of another car in the next batch, gives you a slightly different angle on the refrigeration unit and roof profile: Per the April 1977 ORER there were three batches that at least all had the same dimensions: 11000-11049, 11100-11149, 11200-11249. Some of the cars were equipped for handling pallets of cheese. Β

Β Athearn's are just WAY too thick...
highpeak
I found a better picture at http://users.silcon.com/~lgoss/bar11040.htm, you can see the step Mike is referring to at the left edge of the door. That one you link to does have it though Tim, sure you aren't overlooking it because the detail is lost in the orange-dip paint?
Talltim
You know, I think I'm just losing it! You are right, the step is there and the grill is too, just not very obvious Thanks for humouring me
298
You know, I think I'm just losing it! You are right, the step is there and the grill is too, just not very obvious Thanks for humouring me But the tip of the exhaust isn't there.... Β The older Athearn 57' isn't too bad, but lacks the finer and road specific details of newer releases and is based on a short run of R-70-20 cars for PFE (mainly because of the roof ribs). Better models are available from Genesis, Red Caboose (they do one in BAR but with high ladders), and Intermountain. Β If you're wondering what to do with it, many have seen use as grounded bodies for Insulated or cold storage, or just push it over onto a low trailer: Β Β http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=242146
