RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted March 8, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 8, 2018 Same job all week, added little bit at the start though, picked a loco up at crewe to take to coleham Down to site in a van then train back to Basford hall, had a bit of fun though as the rear loco failed at cemmaes rd and as it wasn’t running it couldn’t be left on the rear of the train as it wouldn’t maintain its air so we had to detach at cemmaes, train up to tallerddig, dump the wagons and take the lead loco back to cemmaes to collect the failed loco then return to tallerddig for the train and doublehead it back To top things off the ERTMS screen then failed in the lead loco, the signaller still had me under full supervision and I could hear when the screen beeped at me so I had to carry on st a reduced speed confirming with the box that I had authority at the various block markers en route, routes going through stations etc, basically driving blind as all my signals and speedo are on the screen, this is where route knowledge comes into play! luckily I have an emergency speedo app on my work iPad so I could use that, despite both failures and the extra moves to and from tallerddig we were still running mega early so despite going slower than usual we managed to get to Sutton bridge pretty much on time where I shut down the ERTMS and reverted back to the normal speedo for the run to crewe Left the locos in Basford hall for the fitters to attend today Same again tonight but hopefully with less drama!

Iron Horse
Ah........so that was you on the loco move The earlier train to Talerddig went past me as I drove to Willaston down Gresty Lane so at least I know that one of the loco's was 302, cheers

sdw7300
Great pics Jim. Thanks for sharing The 97/3's are starting to look in desperate need of a good clean or a paint touch-up!
RMweb Gold big jim Posted March 9, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 9, 2018 (edited) So if I am reading this correctly, the activation of ERTMS disables the loco's speedo? Yes the mechanical speedo stops working and it becomes digital on the screen Ah........so that was you on the loco move The earlier train to Talerddig went past me as I drove to Willaston down Gresty Lane so at least I know that one of the loco's was 302, cheers I did give you a toot as I passed, when the baglans passed me I did wonder if you would be at Willaston crossing having a nose! RMweb Gold big jim Posted March 12, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 12, 2018 The Passenger service behind needed the up side, as it happened the down service used it too To be honest I could have had a go at getting to Sutton bridge but I didn’t want to knock the passenger service as the signaller phoned me at tallerddig and asked could I do it in 1 hour 20 mins from there but I was a bit wary of getting up briedden bank after tallerddig was breached at a mere 20mph! I think I had the poor engines as the driver behind had 15 loaded wagons and made it over the top at the same speed as me (and I had 10 empty and 5 loaded!)
RMweb Gold big jim Posted March 13, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 13, 2018 just a couple from last night, ballast cancelled but ended up taking a pair of 56s from basford hall to chirk to rescue the logs and work it through to warrington cambrian ballast again tonight
RMweb Gold big jim Posted March 14, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 14, 2018 Just 2 from this morning, cambrian ballast which got cancelled on arrival at the possession marker boards so back to crewe loaded! Left it as is for tonight’s train save the other driver messing about as the loco would just end up on the same wagons again Will have to see if it runs tonight
RMweb Gold big jim Posted March 15, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 15, 2018 Back to the Cambrian last night, this made me laugh when you read what’s on the sign! https://youtu.be/pUd2vJr3-_s More ERTMS issues last night, stopped me approaching a block marker thinking I’d past it and then the screen went again, it’s the future! And the usual shot at Basford hall
RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted March 19, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 19, 2018 Didn’t expect to be doing snowploughing again so soon but today it was another trip to buxton and Hindlow to get the line open Collected the ploughs from Gresty bridge Into Stockport And away to buxton, I was in the 2nd mans seat so was able to get some pics, now today snow wasn’t the problem, it was icicles in eaves tunnel We slowly crept through breaking them off Very gently but it was still horrendous hearing them coming crashing down and there were some serious chunks of ice to be seen! Only really one drift to contend with at the summit of the line, outside footage of this made it onto BBC northwest tonight But we made it to buxton! We headed back to eaves tunnel and it was decided it was too risky to attempt to go back though and risk damaging the locos, the NR bloke with us said they wouldn’t reopen the line with the ice the way it was until a RRV came and broke them all down, so thisnisbas far as we got before running back wrong line to buxton We then went to peak forest where we found out 2 locos has already been through dove holes tunnel so we didn’t need to prove it so we headed back to buxton and went on our way to Hindlow (in hindsight had we done that first we wouldn’t have had to retrace our steps to peak forest! Back in Buxton Hindlow Not too deep this time compared to the other week And that was it for pics, we then went back to buxton, peak forest, chinley, hazel grove, northenden, Altrincham, northwich, sandbach and back to gresty to drop the ploughs off then 56s back to Basford hall! Another good fun productive day!

RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted March 25, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 25, 2018 Some from today, days like this make you forget you are actually in work! Had to drive the van to Machynlleth where we picked up a pair of 97s to take To Aberystwyth to collect some wagons, being as we had the line to ourselves for a few hours until the first passenger train we stopped for a couple of pics as the sun began to rise over the mountains After shunting and buffering up to the wagons we had 3 hours to spare in Aberystwyth which at the time we got there was deserted After some breakfast we wandered over to the vale of rheidol railway for a nose We were very kindly shown round the shed too, some interesting locos and equipment in there including a 2ft gauge permquip P-way trolley which looked great fun and 1/2 size tamping machine, there was also a Garret, quarry hunslet, Kerr Stuart and a sir Haydn from the tallyllyn railway Then it was time to leave, 15 Lobster wagons Welshpool And into crewe And that was that
