RMweb Premium Popular Post DavidLong Posted May 27, 2016 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 27, 2016 (edited) Good to see Toton so busy . . . or is it the opposite and they should all be out working? Anyway here's a few snaps from Toton fifty years ago. A bit grainy due to the trusty Brownie's shortcomings! General view of the depot with mostly Peaks and brake tenders but there is one Derby Sulzer Type 2 visible: The loco in the middle of the above picture is D156 with, I think, a rather smart D7 behind (although I did note that D1 and D9 were also present at the time): Finally, this WD came rolling past while I was taking the photographs. Completely grimy and unidentifiable as usual. Although, having checked my notes it could be 90514 which was at Colwick in 1965 before being withdrawn in January 1966. Note the Conflat L and containers behind the loco. These things seemed to turn up in a lot of photos from the 1960s. All the photos were taken on a school Railway Society outing to Derby in 1965. I wish I could go back and ask my fourteen year old self why I didn't take any photos of 10000, 10201, 10202 and 10203 . . . oh dear . . . Not the most comfortable of loco's to be on a night turn at 30 mph all the way has to be said! How many times would you expect to be looped on that particular diagram at 30 MPH Jim? I figure on it taking just under 5 hours with NO stops, but that's never going to happen is it! Edited May 27, 2016 by Gary H

For some obscure reason I wasn't thinking about the gradient. On a railway related theme though I remember a family picnic in IIRC 1960 sitting somewhere that is now under the northbound M6 watching maroon Duchesses pounding north. RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted June 2, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 2, 2016 Had to travel to the Cambrian today for tomorrow's job, bit of a disaster took me 10 hours to get here! Took the van to derby then planned to get a train to Birmingham and onward to Machynlleth (and ultimately llwyngwril) only to be thwarted by a fatality at Tamworth so knowing if missed the connection at brum I decided to go home but then realised I'd have to leave tomorrow at 14:00 to get to Machynlleth in time to prep my train which is no good as I'm working until the early hours of Saturday so I ended up biting the bullet and heading to the Cambrian! Being as I had so long to wait in various places I decided to stay on board to Aberystwyth rather than having an hour and a half in maccy! And back to Macc And onward to llwyngwril
RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted June 3, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 3, 2016 some from today before work between llywngwril and fairbourne testing the zoom from the same spot then drove down to penrhyn point in fairbourne then took my mum to tywyn via tonfanau plaque by the entrance to the old camp newly renovated station house then went into tywyn and drove back towards tonfanau as far as the footbridge and that was that for the day, back for a sleep now off to work starting in machynlleth going to derby (via pwllheli!)

Fat Controller
When Lynne was working on the signalling systems for CTRL Section 2 at CSEE in Paris, a couple of French lads were preparing to leave for Mach to commission the ERTMS; she spent some time teaching them how to pronounce the names to avoid upsetting the locals. She also taught a couple to sing Hen Wlad F'yn Nhadau, so that we had some moral support at Stade De France for the rugby..
