RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted April 22, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 22, 2013 today was my first trip over the S+C, what can i say, WOW, its one heck of a line, none of it has sunk in as ive only done one trip one way but i should pick it up quite quick with any luck the day started with a bit of road refreshing crewe to carlisle via the wcml, surprising how much i remembered even though it has been 6 years since i last went over it, some odd looking new signals round lancaster though! so into carlisle to wait for the LE to come in from kingmoor, this came through while i was waiting, i'd passed it in carnforth on the way to carlisle too and in came my chariot for the day, 66850 obviously no pics en route as the phone is off in the cab, a nice run over to ribblehead, following a passenger service so it was block to block which was a bonus as i was learning it so got to see it on restrictive aspects, to get into ribblehead you have to run down to settle jn and back north and into the sidings via a groundframe, here is the loco inside the frame with ribblehead station in the background, by this point it was raining sideways! almost ready to go once loaded and brake tested its out of the frame on over ribblehead viaduct to run round in blea moor loop behind the signal during the run round and away to warrington, again no pics en route but gave newbryford a toot on the horn as i passed his house (even though i think he wasnt in) finally got stopped at farrington jn waiting to head onto the wcml so got a couple of pics there and on to warrington for relief while i was waiting for the train home this came through, got a video of it but accidently deleted it!!

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted April 23, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 23, 2013 Excellent stuff Jim, once you get Settled (groan) I'm sure you will be able to take in more of the awesome scenery the line has to offer.
RMweb Premium phil-b259 Posted April 23, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 23, 2013 I may take my charger and window suction phone holder and do a time lapse of the route later in the week, will help me get it in my head a bit, dont think the phone will last for 5 hours videoing somehow Shame loco cabs don't come with 'auxilary power sockets' (what used to be called the cigarette lighter)

Your proposal would be great if you can do that Jim!
Dr Gerbil-Fritters
Jim, do UK locos have in-cab video recording cameras these days? I notice that the US class ones seem to. And GPS...
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted April 23, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 23, 2013 gave newbryford a toot on the horn as i passed his house (even though i think he wasnt in) I was in today though! Cheers, Mick

RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted April 23, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted April 23, 2013 Shame loco cabs don't come with 'auxilary power sockets' (what used to be called the cigarette lighter) gbrf 66s have aux sockets and all 66s have a 74v supply with an american plug so using a us adapter means you can charge phones etc which is handy Jim, do UK locos have in-cab video recording cameras these days? I notice that the US class ones seem to. And GPS... fastlines ex 66s had gps but no locos and i believe units have cab cameras in but they do have front facing CCTV I was in today though! Cheers, Mick the speed i went past i could have stopped for a cup of tea and a chat!! That would be brilliant, Jim! Best, Pete. i'll see what i can do, got to get the phone somewhere where it is non obtrusive so i can set it running prior to departure and not touch it but still be able to charge on the move, i can put it in airplane mode (surely you can't be serious........ i am serious, and don't call me shirley) so it is ok to have on in the cab only a couple of pics today, first up hellifield, in the goods loop waiting for the block to clithero to clear which takes 30 mins as the line is 30mph for freight!! and at the other end, waiting at daisyfield jn, problems in the area so i had to sit and wait while they were resolved, left there 25 late, made up a bit by warrington and got in about 12 late
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted April 23, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 23, 2013 Jim I wonder whether you can change the airplane mode symbol to a train as that would be cool ... Well for us train enthusiasts anyway!

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted April 24, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 24, 2013 I'm sure those signals were mentioned in a discussion on the previous forum - they are interesting as each of the near signals is a single arm reading to a single junction signal (left to Leeds, right to Blackburn) rather than making each of them a junction signal in it's own right - this simplifies the locking. Excellent stuff Jim

RMweb Premium newbryford Posted April 25, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 25, 2013 again nowt spectacular today, been assessed so i can now officially drive 66s on my own again, next stop 56 and 47 refresh, only a couple of photos again, first stop blackburn today....... I believe you had an early run today as you swapped paths with 6K05 (which had a Euroshed DIT behind the train engine - I think it's the first time a ECR 66 has been my way - which I manged to miss photting by 30 seconds) Cheers, Mick
RMweb Gold big jim Posted April 25, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 25, 2013 yeah we left kingmoor as the ecr 66 was being shunted out of the loco neck, he put us in at blackburn and it passed us there, double whammy, an ECR and a namer 66 on the same train (seacows i believe)
reevesthecat
Hi Jim Loving the thread but I was wondering, I don't know where in the country you live but you mention being dropped off at Warrington and waiting for the train home. Do they allow for this travelling time in your shifts or is it on top of the working day? In theory and if your train home is late it could add a couple of hours to your day! RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 26, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 26, 2013 (edited) That van comment sort of explains why I see 'Freighliner' van running through Retford (road not 36E/ECML/Sheffield Lincoln). I should think it's crew moving between West Burton or Cottam and somewhere else; Worksop? Really enjoying you pics by the way. Being an 'engine driver' still has its' good points. jeff mcghie
Any likelyhood of you making it north of the border on the tank trains Jim? We're about to kick the spare Colas 66 out of the tamper sidings at Stirling, believe its going to stable in the little spur at the North end off the Down main. Unfortunately means that all those nice semaphore brackets will be going as well.... Cheers jeff.
