Is the chopper any good ? I read some reviews which indicated the blade wasn't 'tight', so accurate cutting could not be acheived.

Stu

Finally used the Chopper in anger (ooer misses) and so can report on my findings.

I had no problems with the blade not being 'tight' and it was dead easy to use - much better than the dodgy Heath-Robinson lash-ups I'd created myself before now. I found it accurate enough for my uses but then again I normally work to scenic tolerances rather than model engineering ones!

Here's a few shots of it almost in action:

Oh, and Jason got one at the same show as me and has been doing some mighty fine work with it: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/48251-bacup-mills-in-the-hills/?p=1155712

PS - why do I get the feeling there will be an injury at some point following reaching under the blade for something??

And for those wondering, them there bits above were for the Maunsell coach underframe.

The kit contains a bag of three different sorts of microstrip - 11 bits in all, and there's probably around 1/4mm difference between the type dimensions. Easy to confuse and get mixed up. So, once I identified which was which, one end was marked up with a (marker) pen. (no mark / 1 mark / two marks). These are the ones I'd be needing for the underframe:

Using the Chopper (see my previous post), a range of lengths were cut and the C-section beams that make the underframe were finished off.

Tonight's top tip - don't miss the note that tells you to do this before you fit the battery boxes!

The next installment will include a soldering iron, lots of rude words and some burnt fingers. Deep joy:

Really glad I stumbled acrtoss this topic again, as i've been hoping to see a build of a slaters coach! Can't wait to see it progress!

Your wish is my command - some (minor) progress.

Cutting out the corner braces for the truss rods:

Making up one of the brake thingies (I could have used superglue but wanted some soldering practice, and in actual fact the hardest bit was fitting in the plastic T piece):

Doesn't look much but it took me about 90mins to do.... now where's that brandy?

How's the Coach coming along Chris?

Thanks for the interest Jack.

The coach is all parked up in the sidings at the moment...been a bit busy with non-modelling stuff and changing employers in just over a week.

Will be getting back in the saddle shortly....

All the best with the job change Chris and look forward to further updates. At least your fingers have had time to heal a great plus point I`m sure.

Flicking through the latest emailed announcement from Kernow I came across the item below:

http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/product/41781/44182Z_Bachmann_Scenecraft_LSWR_Ground_Frame_Hut_Boscarne_Jn

The various images should help me check / compare the dimensions I've worked out from photos for a 7mm version.

Looks like it will be possible to do Boscarne from RTP / RTR equipment in OO before long - just those GWR outside cylinder tank thingies left now!

Very Nice thread Chris.

I like the trouble you have gone too with you quick links at the start, very handy.

I see you did dish a bit of stick at me ref the Lincs coupling, being one who was dissatisfied with the new manufacturers unfulfilled promises.

What did you decide on eventually?  I've gone with the Lincs variant that I described which is easy to make & fit from readily available parts.

Regards

This I always finding extremely interesting on which coupling type of choice folk go for, in relation to era and their layout operations IE: fixed rakes to mass shunting rake breakdown, although some tend to stick to 1 coupling type for all occasions are that's what always worked best or preferred etc.

Very Nice thread Chris.

Thanks chap, nice to have you along - just got to find the (appropriate) time to get building, mind you I did say it would be a slow burn project.....

I like the trouble you have gone too with you quick links at the start, very handy.

I'm also responsible for starting off the thread for Damian's Diesels in the Duchy layout which is now well over 200 pages. The size of that that and the difficulty finding stuff made me think that an index post would be useful. It's mainly to help me find bits of interest in the future and if it helps others too that's great.

I see you did dish a bit of stick at me ref the Lincs coupling, being one who was dissatisfied with the new manufacturers unfulfilled promises.

I've just had a look through my thread and, unless I've missed something, the only stick given out was five words in the post below:

"The ones that interest me most at the moment are the (currently unavailable) Lincs. These are discussed in a 7mm coupling thread with pictures from this post onwards. Pity the thread got heated...To my eyes they appear simple, robust and allow cosmetic three-links to remain in place."

What did you decide on eventually?  I've gone with the Lincs variant that I described which is easy to make & fit from readily available parts.

I've currently gone for no couplings at all. This seems to work well on the single length of flexi on the work bench! I'm still interested in the Lincs type but no final decision made yet, especially as I've not finalised the track plan and worked out what I need from a coupling (Yes Stubby, I know they connect bits of stock together). At least with that option I can fit / use cosmetic 3-links for now and then retro fit a Lincs.

There is progress but it's currently slow and limited to the odd minute here and there - in fact I spent more time modelling on Sunday, doing some bridge abutment painting on my FIL's layout, than I have on my own stuff in the last month. Ho hum.

Long time no post but I'm back, suitably refreshed, and progressing well with stock for Pencarrow.

The most challenging (for me) has been the protracted build of a WEP clay wagon. Perhaps not the best place to start with brass kits but the process has certainly been 'character forming'. I soon realised that any hope of building the thing with my stock 25W Antex iron was a non starter - it simply could not put enough heat into the large pieces of brass. I read around a bit and many folk recommended the 40W size as being suitable, so I got an 80W one for Xmas. This has made things significantly easier, although a little more unkind on the fingers!

So here's a few few progress shots taken during the build.

The homemade soldering station (ok, two blocks of wood):

The abused tools pressed into action:

Soldering stuff and the new iron:

Random building photos (must find the early stages ones).

(and yes, the end tipping door does open)

The wagon is now all cleaned up and primed in grey and I've moved onto the next kit - a Toad E...

So the Toad E, I really should have done this one first, before the clay, as it is a much easier build. But then, where's the fun in that!

This is the kit I'm building - a 'skill builder' set.

post-6675-0-58443500-1389972305_thumb.jpg

I'm slowly getting the hang of this thingie to help with the folds and bends:

post-6675-0-28507700-1389972312_thumb.jpg

The main parts cut out, rivets bashed and folds done.

Further photos to follow (although my post count in future will be well below what it has been in the past and I'm concentrating on 'doing' this year and focusing on a single project).

How's the Coach coming along Chris?

That will be finished after the Toad E, which will give me more practice to help with doing the second coach bogie.

I'm not buying anything new until all the currently started kits are completed. (Famous last words)

Hi Chris,

So are you enjoying yourself with all this dabbling in 7mm ?

Martyn.

It's very addictive and the brass kits are certainly value for money in terms of the great number of hours it takes me to build them!
