The biggest problem that I have found with any heavy engineering project in the UK is the availability of the correct material, particularly the thicker sections larger rolled plates and specialist grades of material. (Try buying big sheets of inconel for instance!)

You're very often looking at having the material made to order some place like Germany with a lead time of months and the subsequent transport costs. I've found that it is better in many cases to consider all the options with what you have and throw away nothing that cannot be used even for a pattern.

If there's one thing that I have learnt, is that there's not much that can't be repaired, it's just a matter of funds and equipment.

Germany, yes.

Hence Tornados' Boiler makers and some other items. Also the fact they have still got decent production of Steam Loco equipment for their own use.

I know that if you want a ring of 150x100x1800 O/D EN8/9 forging (such as a loco tyre) it's off to jolly old Deutschland, although there's firms who can machine and flame harden it here.

Very nice Robin. That is the Dapol version I think?  Mine is so much better than the Hornby version although I think I still had to fiddle with the trailing coupling to ensure reliable Kadee coupling.

I envy your stock of black livery locos - essential for the look of a 1947 layout

Best wishes

I think South Devon Engineering buy thier stocks of tyres from South Africa - certainly 82045 tyres came from there as I watched them being assembled on the gas hearth

Poor confused Hornby. They have recently advertised their BR electric locos as diesels and now they have advertised a steam engine as electric. Just now need to advertise a diesel as being steam and that's a full house.... 🤣

Perhaps it got one of those forms from the council etc that ask too many questions considering that you just want a new wheelie bin and it self identified as an electric locomotive? Much in the same vein as our local council now have to address me as a helicopter?

That's easy.

It's a 1955 Goblin Teasmade.

Or maybe it's the Flying Scotsman?

For 2 years , one of these woke me up at 06.00 . The gentle murmur of warming water was much less stressful than an alarm .
