RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted July 13 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 13 Before we arrived in the South Hams we stopped off at Dawlish for a look round. Whilst on the beach at Coryton we noticed some work being done on the cliff faces of Lea Mount. I wouldn't have been brave enough to abseil the face let alone carry out the essential work. 18
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted July 13 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 13 Having taken a 22 bus to Dawlish some months ago, I was astonished at the huge encampment in the fields above the cliffs. So many vehicles, huts etc. Huge investment in keeping this line open. [The 22 runs from Paignton, and via Torquay & Teignmouth, so you get a lot for your £2! It also runs only 5 mins from Sherry's flat.]

That's basically all nature is trying to do anyway. John Edited July 13 by Dunsignalling 3 4 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post gwrrob Posted July 14 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 14 Not my photo but what a cracking photo , taken by a drone I believe, of the paddle steamer bearing the same name as the Castle in the background. Not 5015 unfortunately. Always one to recommend a holiday in South Devon !

My sister-in-law and her husband stayed in it on holiday a couple of years ago. I've only seen it when walking on the other side of the river, to Dartmouth Castle and beyond. 5
RMweb Premium Popular Post Tim Dubya Posted July 14 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 14 Didcot Railway Centre on Facebook: "90 years ago today, on Saturday 14 July 1934, the Great Western Railway started its system of numbering express passenger trains to and from the West of England. The system of reporting numbers was designed to show the train’s starting station and time, destination and whether it was the second, third, fourth or even fifth relief part of a service. Swindon Works made slotted frames, three feet long, to take enamelled numbers on 20-inch black plates with 16-inch numerals. This publicity photograph shows the numbers being fitted at Swindon station, but not on one of the express trains. Experiments showed that the numbers could be read from over a quarter of a mile away, as an aid for signalmen. To start the system, trains from Paddington carried numbers between 100 and 199; those from Shrewsbury 200 to 299; from Wolverhampton and Birmingham 300 to 399; from Bristol 400 to 499; from Exeter 500 to 599; from Plymouth 600 to 699 and South Wales 700 to 799. The number of each booked train was to end in either ‘0’ or ‘5’ with 1,2,3,4,6,7,8 and 9 being used for trains being run in more than one part. The down Cornish Riviera started as number 125 with relief portions carrying 126 up to 129 inclusive. The up Cornish Riviera carried 615, The down Torbay Express was 150 and the up service was number 515. The 8.30am Channel Islands Boat Express from Paddington carried 100. Special excursion trains carried a ‘0’ as the first figure and Ocean Specials from Plymouth carried ‘00’ followed by the figures 1 to 6 according to their classification. For its first year, the system ran until 29 September." 13
