RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 3, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2014 Had an afternoon in the shed, got nothing i planned to do done but did a few other little bits and bobs done that ive been planning to do for a while I did a bit of track fettling around the points at the end of the station, there was a dip in the track which i've got rid of by re-packing the track with fresh polystyrene riser pieces, doing that made it a much smoother ride Next up i decided to fill the missing sleeper spaces throughout the layout, this is the mainline before i started.... And afterwards And in the yard Just a couple more sets of points to add sleepers to and the whole lot is done I then turned to a blank corner of the layout, i'm miles away from doing any scenery work but this is what i want to do in the bottom corner of the layout Im going to use some old hachette track to make a lifted line that will head off into a corrugated up tunnel mouth, i'll also use a Bachmann derelict signal box i had i stock as well as a damaged Dapol semaphore i got cheap from the factory While i was doing all work that i just left the trains running round ...... 19 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 9, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 9, 2014 finally wired up the point motors for the yard, this time i decided to use 3 core mains cable instead of individual strands, wish i'd have done it on all the other motors, a much tidier job and cheaper too! added a polarity switch to a couple of the motors for teh 3 way point but i dont think it will work as the yard has a reverse loop module fitted so switching blade polarity within the switchable area may cause it to throw a wobbler!! then as it was so nice outside i decided against going into the shed and thought about making a start on my log wagons the wooden parts of the wagon supplied by andy7 glued together the ends pieces and then in turn glued them to the wagon and gave then a coat of blue on the outside and grey on the inside glued together the stanchions (14 per wagon) and gave them a coat of red as i'm not going for "newbryford" levels of detail ive decided to leave the wagons blue, i've painted the corus logos out on the sides with humbrol 14 (as per the ends) i've also decided to leave the timber cross members fitted rather than going to the trouble of cutting them flush, i've cut the ends off though so they are flush with the ends of the wood decking i then fitted the stanchions to the wagon using the existing cross members as a guide to where to place them one down 4 more to go! once they are all done i'll weather them down a touch, i'll probably leave them unloaded, i may also add ratchet straps quite pleased with how its come out 18 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 13, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 13, 2014 (edited) After spending the last few days looking at the real log wagons i realised that the spacing between the stantions was not right on my models, anyway being as ive only pva'd them on i lifted them off and put them in a more prototypical manner, the spacing is a bit odd on them With 3 very close over the bogies and 3 spaced wider towards the middle of the wagon Much better looking, i've adjusted 3 of the others to match and just need to redo the first one, paint the final set of stantions for the last wagon and i'm done ready to weather up Edited August 13, 2014 by big jim 7 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 14, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2014 been thinking about how to make some loads for the log train tonight..... while in chirk checking the wagons yesterday evening i noticed there were lots of little branches and twigs left on the wagon decks after they had had most of the debris blown off prior to departure so i grabbed myself a handful and bought them home to see what i can do with them! i was thinking of using a piece of foam or a bit space board i have spare as the core of the log stack and glueing the twigs, sorry, logs, to the outside of it with pva, either do one long 'multiple stack' load per wagon or separate individual stacks, i think one load will be easier and quicker be nice if my plan works, a log train with genuine chirk logs on it!! 4 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
RMweb Gold big jim Posted August 14, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2014 Did a bit of work to the log carriers this afternoon, changed the stantions again as they were too close above the bogies And then i moved a couple of centre stantions closer towards the centre Then it was a look at the log piles, if i hade complete piles it would take me forever!! As it happened the wagons had packaging pieces around the bogies so i used those to fill the centre of the stack To which i added "logs" And a 2nd layer I think they look ok, the only thing is a made them too short, prototypically they sit against the stantions right but are 1.3cm too short for the model wagons! So for the next set i though i would do a 3 stack built around a piece of space foam Just waiting for the stack to dry and then i can test fit it to the wagon Im going to need 2 x 3 stacks per wagon so i'll grab more sticks next time i go to chirk!! A small observation, but regarding the gaps, would you be better off painting the foam brown or black before applying the logs?? RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted September 10, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2014 One way of doing the straps is to place a piece of masking tape on a clean piece of plastic, cut it into narrow strips with a ruler. Remove each alternate one then paint the ones left orange. Once dry lift each one as you need them and then place over the logs gluing the ends down with canopy glue. You can even give them a coat of canopy glue using your fingers prior to lifting them off the plastic to make them stronger. Can be fiddly and may need a bit of practice but I have done similar for straps. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
