As regards legal action, they seem to get away with copying other manufacturer's products. They even have a series of replica Dinky Toys, which, while long out of production, presumably still have a copyright owned by somebody?

I could be wrong but I thought that (at least for die-cast buses), Atlas Editions do not make their own moulds based on existing models, GBL style.

I think that Atlas use existing moulds (but generally with less detailing then added) and either borrow the moulds, or have the models made for them by the original company.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

They have a mix of 'bought in' and commissioned models the 'Stobart World' is a good example. Of the 8 models announced, three of the models are by Oxford, one is most likely by Bachmann (Class 66), one I think is a model produced by another company specialising in commissions and is a 'standard' model (the helicopter), I have an example of this model in the livery of the Essex air Ambulance. The remaining three models, the excavator, the road-rail Unimog and the wheel loader appear to be commissions.

The spare Heljan Western chassis is here. I see some mild GBL body stretching approaching over the horizon.....  :butcher:

Update: a preliminary "try" of the bodyshell on the chassis confirms that a slight degree of stretching would help. Also, at least two of the internal transverse strengthening "ribs" must be removed completely, whilst two others need cutting down. But still looks encouraging.

Ive relented, stopped trying to make the glazing unit better, have purchased another brassmasters etch.

I've seen a second hand Dapol on e bay...at roughly the same price as my final outlay on this model. I know I would open the Dapol box and be mighty impressed....might even drool as per my hero and role model Mr H Simpson.....but where's the fun...the sense of achievement........then again to quote my hero..." Just because your good at something....doesn't mean there arnt sixty billion people better at it than you.."....or was it my beloved...

You could well be right. I think the replica Dinkies are made for them by Norev, but I might be wrong.

Almost there: transverse ribs removed and / or cut back.

There is a vertical pillar inside the corner of each nose which also needs removal so that the body can slide all the way down.

Looking good sir, nice to see you "take the bull by the horns" and do a "proper Job" (as we say here in Devon) together with your findings which are helpful. I've got an old Lima body which could be put on the rack at some future date with a new chassis.

Please keep us posted.

p.s. Do you have a finished livery in mind ( by livery I don't mean anything horse related!)

Cheers and as always happy modelling

....have purchased another brassmasters etch.

Looks like I'll be ordering an etch pack soon.

Grab it if you can. Then you will have a benchmark to work with.

Sorry horsetan....predictive text..the curse of...anyway nice chassis....the Heljan that is....shows upmtheblima offering...I mean brake gear in line with wheels...looking at the brassmasters etch. I did not add these extra refinements on my original model....I fear the overwide Lima wheels would foul the replacement brake rodding...will continue to ponder...

My GBL Western is parked up on a siding behind the Diesel Depot that is unpowered & rarely used.

What did the "Western" say to the "Warship" ?

"I can't Torque, I've lost my Voith" !!!!!

What's due next week ?

I'm making the saw cut behind the roof patch so I can move it forward. This will be a piece of cake compared to the cooler group grilles and the other roof cover panels!

too late for me to alter my choice...will be interested in how yours looks though. I've just re examined my earlier BR blue Lima and have started to scalpel out te recessed areas for door handles, having now completed that task on maroon GBL. On both models over enthusiastic gouging meant some remedial filling in with plastic and solvent cement...the joys of modelling

Oh God, the number of complaints we had after the last series....

Meanwhile, another comparison between Dapol and GBL shells convinces me that the entire cab needs shifting forward, not just the roof:

Horsetan I feel I am in operating theatre awaiting the consulting surgeon to decide where to make te first incision. I have a second GBL body awaiting the outcome of this fateful act!

Your moving the whole cab forward will I'm sure also solve the problem of fitting it over the Heljan chassis. It might create a bit of a problem for me using the Lima one...having said that would not be the first diesel under frame I have lengthened...looking forward to your results. lastly experimented yesterday by cutting off one of the Lima plastic brakes and realigning it...no real problem with the outer shoe...the inner one.....mmmm..a work in progress.
