Dont fret.

Looks fine albeit here on the PC.

Maybe enhance with Matt - Semi Gloss Oil Stain "puddles" eventually?

Ian

That's easy for you to say Ian!!! It's actually sad....

The iPhone camera's exposure makes the light look very different. I am much happier with how it is now and pleased that the majority of the depot floor has been weathered. It has been a long time coming.

Thanks for your input Ian, I plan to give all the pieces a coat of matt varnish.

Not sure whether to try adding puddles of oil etc. I will think about that.

I can only agree with what Ian has said, and if it looks good to you that is all that matters,it looks great to me anyway

David

Thanks David. Yes that is true, I am now happy with how it all looks.

I will post more photos tomorrow.

Looking good.

I'm finding the camera can be rather cruel but at the same time really useful. I've started taking pictures of my projects and viewing them on the pc next to the real thing. I've found loads of errors, comprises etc. that way! Really hard to get colours right though... Tbh that's very personal and really depends on lighting. I'll admit to using the wrong shades to better fit with the rest of the scene.

At the end of day we always find more wrong with our stuff than others do!

Looking forward to your next update - inspirational stuff!

Cheers

Will

Thanks Will, it's funny how you can look at things. Perhaps if I hadn't have taken the photos then maybe I would have just accepted the floor as it was. Whereas now I am much happier with it, so with hindsight, maybe it was a good thing that the camera highlighted the floor!

I am definitely the hardest person to please!

Hi Alex, You seem to be making some good progress at the moment. I do like a ploughed up class 20.

Hows the wagon selling and are you busy with the transfers? I might have to order some more soon.

Cheers Peter.

Hi Peter,

Yes I am, motivated and inspired to keep going! As you know only too well, I have been trying to get the floor pieces painted and weathered for a good few years so really pleased to have got this far.

Wagon projects are keeping Cav and I very busy thanks, looking forward to seeing the PGAs.

Let me know when you need some and I will be happy to help. I have just produced some black 58 numbers for potential Original Railfreight Bones, I am looking forward to having a few of them!

Here is a photo just taken which shows the floor nicely.

I agree, 20s looked really good with ploughs!

In the end I decided to go for the dirty and grimy appearance for the floor. A few examples of the real thing:

Looking great - the floor "blends" and matches the Traction chassis weathering fine Alex - interesting -  when the paraphernalia of tooling  - oil barrels crates and the like are all in these bits will catch your eye and take the attention away from the floor - it's only that you are concentrating on the subject of the weathering now that it is a focal point.

Thanks Ian, it will do I think. Need to get this layout finished so that I can actually play trains!

Hopefully this century.....

You are right, once all the maintenance equipment, parts, drums and general depot stuff are in position, you probably won't notice the floor. Once the shed and roof are placed in position, due to the reduced light inside the depot the floor definitely won't stand out as much.

I also plan to have the layout viewing level just below eye height to give a nice angle.

Not sure if I have posted this video before:

Something a bit unusual on number 1 road:

As the weather was nice over the weekend I took full advantage and gave the floor pieces a couple of coats of matt varnish.

Whilst looking at something else earlier, I noticed that the roof pieces above roads 1 to 4 are just resting on the top of the shed. This gave me an idea, see how the weathered floor looks inside the shed under the reduced light conditions as they will be once in their final position.

I am not convinced that you will be able to see the weathering once in position.....um, I am beginning to ask myself if all those hours spent weathering the floor pieces was actually worth it!

  • 1 month later...

That Duff looks like its approaching the legendary lathe pit.......?

Weathering and all that......   :scratchhead:

Ties us in knots - I agree.

Ian

It's been a while since I have done anything on that part of the layout. The lathe pit looks quite good now with the floor pieces weathered surrounding it.

Why do we do it Ian?!!!

I came across these excellent photos taken inside Toton depot in the late 1960s:

Boxenby with Green diesels, I am quite tempted….before my time but I am still tempted….

I have been preparing to get the raised floor area behind the dead-end roads, roads 5 to 15.
This photo shows it nicely:

And one from the early 1990s:

The actual raised floor has been made but not finished. Yesterday I sprayed the top Plasti-kote - Light Suede. Some light weathering will be applied to match the inspection platforms.

Now I cannot believe what I am typing, the depot floor is now finished!!

I do not know how many times over the past few years I have posted just before the summer saying that I was planning to have the whole depot floor painted and weathered by the end of the summer.
Well this year I have actually achieved it! Phew, that was a bit of a task and challenge!
Still, it’s done.
Over the past couple of weeks I have finished the last two pieces of the floor. These have been redone, painted, weathered and yesterday varnished.

Over the next couple of weeks I am planning to get the floor pieces down and the shed sat in position to see how it looks when all put together.
I still cannot quite believe it….it won’t be long before we make a start on the track work out the front of the shed and begin adding the metal cladding to the outside of the shed.

This afternoon I put the depot shed on its board to see how it is all looking now that the floor pieces have been finished. Over the next few days I am going to make sure that all the floor pieces and inspection platforms are in their correct position and make any necessary adjustments before getting them in their final position. Some of the floor pieces are too long so will need a little trim at the ends.
Once this is all done, I can then get the track plan finalised, printed and then on the board ready to make a start on the track work.

A few photos:

Now with a few of the roof pieces added you can definitely see how there is a reduction in light inside the shed

It will be interesting to see how it looks once all the roof pieces have been added.
