Grimleygrid
Hi class60lover, I do like 58s, especially in Original Railfreight. I have to confess that, if you hadn't noticed, I quite like type 5 traction, 56s, 58s and 60s! Eventually I will get those two Grids, 56002 and 56024, replaced with the newer version of the class 56. Thanks. I am pleased with how the platforms have turned out, in fact very happy thanks. Better than I had hoped! Yes, I am really looking forward to getting the floor down. Thanks David, will post some photos later of an earlier test. Before we started looking at the inspection pit lighting, I took some measurements for the concrete pad which will sit to the front of the depot shed. This will give you an idea of what I am working towards, image by AP474, on Flickr I am looking forward to being able to have all the doors down and closed with a fine line up of traction outside the shed front.
Grimleygrid
When I first cut out the holes for the inspection pits to sit in, no thought had been given to the pit lighting at that stage. However, now that we have settled on the optical fibre cable which is 1.5mm in diameter, this meant increasing the hole size to allow clearance for the cable. So out came the router to take off what was millimetres from the ply wood top. Here you can see a before and after shot of the hole for the inspection pit for road 3 image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr A piece of wood was clamped at both ends of the board and used as a guide for the router image by AP474, on Flickr In order to work on roads 6 and 13 all the pits and platforms had to be removed image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr Once the work had been undertaken it was time to put them all back again! image by AP474, on Flickr A job well done. Now we are ready for fitting the lighting.
Grimleygrid
Type 1 traction, oh how I do like Original Railfreight 20s. That livery really suited them in my opinion. Couldn't resist taking a few photos image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr Using the test piece of optical fibre cable and the inside mechanism of the LED torch, I decided to connect it up to one of the lights from road 3 to see how it looks: image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr Hopefully later in the week we can try and get all the lights on one wall of pit 3 working.

RBE
Great stuff on the layout. Im still not sold on the cool leds though. Too blue IMO. Get some warm whites in there! Those pics are also right up my street. I can see some Toton action diagrammed to go over the peak to the west Im thinking!!
Grimleygrid
Hi Neil, thanks I am pleased with how they are looking. Now I just need to get a few more lights lit! To be honest the Type 1 fleet is quite small so I think I probably would notice! Thanks Cav. Funnily enough Grimley Senior and I had were discussing exactly that on Monday evening! Totally agree the LEDs are too blue, we are going to experiment with different LEDs to see what looks the best. In reality they do not look as blue but the camera on the iPhone seems to make it look worse than it is. Some lovely photos to look at, great for modelling!

Really liking the railfreight 20s, 58s. quite tempted to get a class 58 myself. Cheers Peter.
Grimleygrid
Hi Peter, I have BR Blue No3 Freight in the 1980s, as recommended by yourself! A great book. I really liked the Railfreight 20s, that livery suited them well. Go on get a 58, you know it makes sense!
mason
I think a pair of 20s, one in blue and one in RF just looks so good, definitly one of my favourite locos and really need some again. The pics are fantastic, i love the RF 56 and the 47 on mixed freight and the 20s sat stabled with a plough. Lovely
Grimleygrid
I agree, one in each livery does look good. Especially when they are weather beaten! I wonder how a pair of sound fitted 20s sounds? They are very good photos. I did really like 56s in Red Stripe Railfreight, it really suited them. However, I also liked them in Blue, Large Logo, Original Railfreight and Triple Grey. Okay, okay, I admit it, I do quite like Grids full stop! I will have to get a couple of snow ploughs to sit in a siding with some locos stabled up.
Waverley West
I agree, one in each livery does look good. Especially when they are weather beaten! I wonder how a pair of sound fitted 20s sounds? Does this mean your OCD has finally been cured, Alex?? Surely, the two 20s have to be in the same livery and in numerical order?? I that picture though do you think the grey looks really dark compared to the colour on the model versions, or was that a grey variation?? Definitly choppers stabled with ploughs Alex, i demand it hahahaha

Grimleygrid
Hi Neil, I can imagine. A pair must sound great! I wonder how annoying say 5 or 6 pairs of 20s would sound all running at the same time?!!! Not sure, it might just be the light. It also looks to me like the side has been cleaned, the red also looks very dark too. Perhaps the grey on the model isn’t dark enough. Is this the sort of thing you had in mind? Withdrawn Class 20s, Toton 1991 by Awwalker1, on Flickr Shame they are withdrawn. I did like the Tinsley green pair, I f I recall correctly one of them continued in service up until 1990. Might have to get one! Whilst 25s were just a bit before my time, didn’t really see them much to appreciate the class, I am keen to have a model of this one to have lying around: 25908, Toton 10.1.88 by Isis Pics, on Flickr 25908 by Chris Kirkby`s Photostream, on Flickr 25908 (D7657) by 40011 MAURETANIA, on Flickr How good is Flickr, just found this: BR Blue 56026 & 56025 Toton TMD Fuel Line by NewSpectrum, on Flickr Two Blue Romanian Grids, Bonjour! 87023Velocity
Hi Alex, I need to stop looking at your excellent thread, my 4mm stock keeps winking at me and thoughts of modelling Dallam in 1990 keep appearing in my mind! Remember the green 20's well 030/064. They turned up on a renewals job one weekend night on the line that runs close to my mum's house. Think on that job there was 6-7 different pairs of 20's in use spoil, new ballast, scrap track panels, I had the window open all night trying to watch through the darkness. I am almost certain 20172 (large bodyside numbers)https://www.flickr.com/photos/63308252@N06/5759038237/in/photolist-9LUzqH-jkXrcb-dj56WG-dj58Lx-dj57qe-dj575s-dj57G2-dj584p-dj57CJ-dj57WV-dMkxod-dj57yg-dj567A-dj57PK-9vne8b-9LKeim-nKQ1FL-ex13Wf-dddTum-7Fo1Dn-dMkyyb-dcXwUB-aua7dp-fjbwmU-fiR5QX-fiViVX-fiR7dX-fj3CqS-fjayRo-dydk1E-dNUngC-dje941-ii2iz4-9qnQKV-onZgAx-onZRq4-oEgeTG-dL4qrN-fj3GrC-nkq9RX-fjbEMy-dazV5h-mYY9rK-mZ6Nzq-mZ1wgx-mZ3M4q-mZ3vaw-mZSWGr-n2pCj8-mZSKgx-8TwBk9 appeared aswell on that job. Grimleygrid
Hi Neil, I think that would make a cracking micro layout, a siding or two and then one line for movements. Not being an expert on 25s but they do look good to me. Go on, you know you want to! Blue Romanian Grid, it makes sense!
Grimleygrid
Hi Simon, I am glad that you enjoy looking through my thread. Shame there isn’t more to see, unlike Dallam which is moving at a much faster pace than Boxenby! I had forgotten about 20172 and 20028. Were they Thornaby machines at one point? Seems like the sort of thing they would do, large bodyside numbers, red buffer beam etc. Didn’t they also have a white roof? Not sure. That must have been great having all those pairs of 20s at one location!I remember a day trip to Langley Mill in 1988, lots of chopper action on HAAs. Quality! Grimleygrid
Mr Shedmaster, how are you Sir? Thanks for dropping by. Thanks, I am quite pleased with the shed doors. Grimleygrid
Wednesday evening I decided to try and get a light on each pit wall lit, to see how it would look. This would then give me an idea of how the final lighting should work and help with installation.Unfortunately this was not very successful. I tried attaching the optical fibre cable to both outer walls using masking tape, a short-term solution, only to find that the inspection pit would not fit in the hole on the board. This was very perplexing to say the least! I was very frustrated but as it was getting late I decided to call it a day. Yesterday evening, with Grimley Senior in attendance, I decided to have a look at the problem to try and find a solution. After measuring, working out what was required and then enlarging the hole last weekend, it was very strange that the pit would not fit?!! I then noticed that I was trying to put the inspection pit into the wrong hole. Oh dear! I know, I am not the sharpest tool in the box……I then tried again, this time with the correct hole and lo and behold no issues at all. Thank goodness for that! All good, now to get the correct colour LEDs and start installing the lighting. I will post a couple of photos shortly.
Grimleygrid
Some photos: Looking down road 3, you can see that the pit light on the left has some plastic film which needs removing. This light was quite dim due to the optical fibre cable having been positioned quickly. When the final installation takes place we will hopefully have found the best way to get maximum light through each inspection pit window. Whether that means each LED will light a certain number, for example 4 lights, more experimenting will be carried out to achieve the best solution. photo 1 by AP474, on Flickr Here you can see both lights clearly working. The far light is illuminating the wall opposite photo 2 by AP474, on Flickr It is incredible how blue the LEDs look in the photos, in reality it is nowhere near as prominent. The optical fibre cable definitely accentuates the colour. Photos of each wall photo 3 by AP474, on Flickr photo 4 by AP474, on Flickr Grimley Senior is now working on the colouring of the LEDs to try and get the desired look.
