AndrewC
Many of you know of Rapido Trains in Ontario and its totally train mad owner Jason Shron. He's just completed his life long dream. Â Â Â His new personal website is here: http://www.kingstonsub.com/ Â Â Â Â Now back to being a quiet hidden lurker.
trisonic
Man, I'd be bored silly with that after 2 minutes.......because I enjoy watching trains but not riding in them............Takes all sorts doesn't it? Â Â Best, Pete.
AndrewC
Pete, basically its a combination rec room and crew room for his layout. Better than the cheesy fad of late 70's basement English faux pubs that everyone seemed to have.
trisonic
Ha! My God I had forgotten about those!  You're absolutely right...  Best, Pete.
Ozexpatriate
Arguably it's a very nice bit of 12" to the foot modelling. Â Not what I'd choose, but it's a nice idea - particularly for a layout operating crew breakroom.
RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted January 8, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 8, 2013 Man likes his Dr Who, though - can't fault that.

Kev_Lewis
It needs something to look at out the windows. A big screen telly or a projector playing film of moving scenery.
RJS1977
Pete, basically its a combination rec room and crew room for his layout. Better than the cheesy fad of late 70's basement English faux pubs that everyone seemed to have. Â Of course you could always build a replica Bulleid Tavern car and have the best(?) of both worlds... Â Â Watching the video, it would appear "Princess Margaret Rose" has changed a lot since her last main line outing! :-P
davknigh
For those who don't know Jason he is a true force of nature. When he tried to get Canadian model railway equipment, specifically passenger coaches he discovered that little or nothing was available outside of a few very rare and expensive brass items and a lot of resprays of totally inaccurate stock that was supposed to pass as Canadian. Manufacturers told hime there was "no market" for proper Canadian models. Jason didn't listen and started up his own company to build models that are stunningly detailed and true to prototype. He has now branched into producing locomotives that match Canadian prototype and as previously mentioned on this forum several versions of the iconic "Canadian" both in CPR, CP Rail, and VIA Rail versions. Â Usual disclaimer. Â Cheers, Â David
Michael Delamar
It needs something to look at out the windows. A big screen telly or a projector playing film of moving scenery.   I always remember when I was a child an episode of play school I think it was.  they showed you how to make the interior of a coach out of a cardboard box, it had 2 tubes from toilet rolls behind the cutout window and had a long roll of paper with the scenery drawn on, the idea that you can put your teddys in it and they'd be on the train and it would seem like its moving. always remember it, but never made it myself. 69843
I'd love a replica of the NSWGR Governor General's car in the loft...if it would fit! http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/images/stories/large/2012/07/02/TravelTrainGovernorGeneralscarriage.jpg
sjgardiner
I think Jason is getting his wish about it going viral (at least by the standards of a Railway video). I've now had several friends email me the link to the video or Toronto Star article saying they assume i'd find it interesting or asking if i know the guy.  Happily, the answer to that is yes, so some day i'll hopefully get the chance to experience Jason's basement coach myself either in helping to build or operate the Kingston Sub when that time comes. GoingUnderground
Rapido coches are, or were, also available in Rocky Mountaineer livery with a range of running numbers. I believe these are only avaialble from the Rocky Mountaineer web site, or you can buy them if you're riding on the Rocky Mountaineer.  There's a guy with an entire London Underground 1959 Driving Motor car installed in his garden in the UK. I'm not sure which is more unusual, reconstructing a slice from a coach in your basement or buying an entire carriage to put on display.

RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted January 8, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 8, 2013 I've always liked Rapido's ads in MR - you can tell the guy has a sense of humour.
AndrewC
Whats wrong with having a pub in your basement.. or living room in our case!!! Ian, it was a really bad cheesy fad. We're talking about mock tudor interiors filled with all the pub tat that was exported from the UK. Horse brasses, old pump handles, trays, ashtrays, coasters, etc, etc. At one time there were several companies that specialised in selling old pub interior fittings. Don't forget that back then there was no good beer available either. There were at least a dozen of these basement pubs on our street alone. Nearly every Saturday night someone would host an evening for the neighbours. The upside was I became very proficient at darts. I'll take Jason's coach any day. RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted January 8, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 8, 2013 Ah thats Ok Andrew as we have removed the mock tudor now!  Still looks like a pub, well off license with the amount of unopened bottles of beer we have at the moment... we hardly ever drink at home  so shouldnt keep buying them!!  That reminds me.. musth check whats on in the Rake today.. or do we go to our local...hmm
dullsteamer
I'd love a replica of the NSWGR Governor General's car in the loft...if it would fit! Â Until it was handed over to the PHM, that car, along with the rest of the state cars, was stored in a big cage on 6 road in the Large Erecting shop at Eveleigh, where I worked for many years. Once or twice the thing got dragged out into the daylight and used - and on one of those occasions we had our lunch in it. We copped a terrific spray from the PHM registrar when she found out about that! Â Cheers, Â Mark.

Horsetan
The late Phil Rollin had BR Std. 4 2-6-0 no.76084 standing in his driveway after he bought her from Barry Scrapyard. Unfortunately he died about ten years after, I think, but the engine eventually went to another group and is not far from steaming.
davknigh
The basic substance of the video clip has now been shown on 2 of the national TV networks here in Canada. They've also mentioned his connection with Rapido Trains and interviewed Jason and his supportive wife. Â Cheers, Â David

Clay Country
Hmm, My wife is away for the weekend and I got a new jigsaw for Christmas... My carpentry skills probably wouldn't stretch to it though. Amazing video.
RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted January 26, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2013 We went to the hobby shop yesterday and they had all the lights off. The Discovery channel were there with Jason filming on the hobby shop's layout.  I tried not to bother them, but I could see they had the Canadian and the Turbo Train running. I don't know when it will run. (Probably the Canadian Discovery channel).
