dibber25
VIA now owns the track into Ottawa for around 40 miles, I believe. They have been ballasting and spot re-sleepering and running work trains with an F40PH at either end (occasionally even a P42 apparently). The work trains are ballast hoppers with side-dumping chutes but apparently without the kind of end control platforms we might expect on a UK ballast hopper. They are brown and branded SETX. Is there anything remotely similar in HO, ready to run or kits? CHRIS LEIGH

canpac38
Chris    Chris just a wee addition could something like this be converted if there ain't nothing else around . The Bowser " 70 Ton 12 Panel triple bay hopper . The 12 bay ones are below the 14 panel versions  http://www.bowser-trains.com/hocars/stew_14_panel/70%20ton%20Hoppers.htm      Cheers    Peter  In deepest darkest Blackford
dibber25
Thanks, both. I'm thinking that it might be as easy and quick to build as to convert something. Pretty basic styrene box with some strip on the outside. Not a project for now, however. Maybe later. CHRIS LEIGH
JWB
One that's closer is the Walthers ballast hopper, with some left on sale at http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/932-34239Â They've had them lettered previously for CP Rail and BCOL; both are close, but the model is about 10% small for the BCOL car. The SETX car has 12 panels while the Walthers has 10, but this could be fixed by sanding the sides smooth and adding styrene square section for the new ribs. dibber25
That might well do the trick. I'm not needing them to be 100% perfect. If I have to do a load of work I probably wouldn't bother at all but these are close enough, I think. CHRIS LEIGH

It might be easier to cut the car in middle near one of the ribs and inserting extra sections in styrene sheet. Not sure how that works with the position of the bottom drops though.
