Bakewell - Peak District Line BR - Layout Views

I thought I'd do a quick update while I can.

 

I haven't had a working internet connection at home this week due to the vagaries of BT, and they seem to have no intention of fixing it properly - I still don't have dial tone on the phone a week later

 

Anyway, here's some photos of what I've done.

 

I have made and remade the staircase sides as I wasn't happy with the way they kept turning out:

 

 

However, eventually I was satisfied, so I ended up with four each of the top and bottom sections, seen here together:

 

 

I took one of each, and made a start adding the uprights and bottom frame of the latticework:

 

 

 

and then the top frame:

 

 

Here's the bottom and middle sections of the lattice completed:

 

 

And here's a reminder of the actual size of the thing:

 

 

I added the top rail to the completed sections:

 

 

and here's a shot of where I've got to:

 

 

I'm not convinced I'm happy with this - my feeling is the lattice is too tall...

 

I might cut this off and try again.

Al, try the side against the span, they should match in hieght, that way you'll see if the lattice is correct or not.

 

Well done BTW for getting the lattice correctly orientated, lots of modellers would say that you have it wrong!

That looks fantastic. I've been reading this thread over the last few days and I'm astounded. At some point I'll be tackling exactly the same type of structure, so I'm following your thread as a step-by-step guide. One question, did you remember the width of the strip out are using for your lattice?

As ever lovely, Al.  BTW, I had a bash at your styrene bending trick.  Not a bad result for a first go:

 

 

While the curve isn't perfect it will be a lot easier to glue in place.  However not following the recipe makes things go all Salvador Dali:

 

 

Need to listen out for the kitchen timer when it's The Small Controller's bed time!

Well thats easy, just swap side to side, and bingo your verticles will be inside! ;-}

Moving on, I decided I wasn't happy with the first side - the latticework was too high, so I cut the top off, and replaced it:

 

Here's how it was last night:

 

 

and here's after I butchered it:

 

 

I then added a new top rail, carefully threading it through the surviving latticework:

 

 

As you can see, I cut off nearly 4mm - which equates to a scale foot!!

 

 

It looks much better though, so now I was happy I could get on with the next one.

 

Here's the start of the complimentary side:

 

 

 

and here it is half way through, with the first layer of latticework applied:

 

 

Finally, here's the two completed sides together:

 

 

Strange, that shot makes them look different sizes, but I have checked, and they are both the same.

Right here is your technical challenge, you have three weeks to make this Caproti Black 5 from this set of brass etches. On second thoughts it might take ten years to film one series.

For the benefit of JCL and others, I thought I'd recap on the sizes of styrene strip used in this build.

 

Starting from largest to smallest, the hand rails along the top of both the main span and the staircases are made from pre-cut 20thou x 80thou strips:

 

 

The top and bottom rails of the I shape side members are made from 10thou x 60thou, as are the uprights of the latticework:

 

 

The top and bottom rails of the lattice are 10thou x 40thou:

 

 

and the lattice itself is made from 10thou x 25thou:

 

 

Hope this is of some help to any budding footbridge builders.

Continuing the build, I made a start on the next pair of sides.

 

However, I've been getting fed up of going cross eyed staring at little bits of plastic, and I'm sure you are getting fed up of photos of yet more latticework, so I decided to do something else, with some other bits of plastic!

 

As I have one completed pair of sides, I elected to create the basic staircase and try it against the bridge.

 

Just to get it out of the way, here's the start of the next side, and the four together in the various stages of construction:

 

 

 

Anyway, first thing I did was to finish detailing the capitals that go under the half landings:

 

 

Then I started to layout and plan how I was going to join the two sides together, and whilst doing that, I created a nice Greek Urn - or possibly candlestick?

 

 

I cut a long strip of 20thou plasticard to the correct width to go between the two sides, and then cut that into thin sections which will form the stairs and the supporting frame sections between the sides.

 

 

I stupidly forgot to take a photo of the sections being attached and the layout of them, but this picture will give some idea:

 

 

So, here's various views of the first set of side steps in position. They need all the intermediate steps adding, and it is obvious that I will have to shorten the columns on the main landings, as the top step is nearly a scale foot below the landing at present.

 

 

 

 

 

In general, I'm quite happy how the staircase has turned out, I think it's a fair representation of the prototype.

 

More importantly, I now feel much more enthusiastic about completing the other side, as it gives me something to aim for.

Hi Andy,

 

When I first cut the columns for the landings, they were only roughly cut to size, as I wasn't sure how tall they should be.

 

The staircase is made to the exact dimensions of the original scale plan, and it is now obvious that the main columns need to be quite a bit shorter.

 

It's not a problem, as nothing is glued together yet, so I can adjust it so the main span sits at the correct height.

 

However, it is correct that the sides of the staircase sit below the sides of the main span, as shown in this photo by Stan Roberts:
