RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted July 23, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 23, 2014 That flockage looks great, a nice start. What static grass do you use, it looks a similar colour to my hanging basket liner. All the static grass I have is much greener. Al. Hi Al, the static grass is Javis summer mix and autumn mix, I combine them in equal measures mixed together. I will post the next stage tomorrow if I get a chance, got the grand children tomorrow so that might not happen, all the best Adrian

RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted July 25, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2014 It's summer, and time for brambles and long grass. Brambles are made from the Morrisons pan scourers (shown in the Flockage Kit Picture). an easy way to make them, lay a scourer on a flat surface and attack it with a saw blade, then a spray of paint from a rattle can. Glue the brambles in place with pva, and spray with hair spray and then sprinkle with coarse turf (burnt grass), another spray wih hairspray and then a scraping of yellow pastel chalk just to give some highlights. Next the long grass, I use field grass, this is to long to use in the static grass gun, put some pva glue down not to big an area at a time, then pull some out of the packet keeping it nice and straight, holding the end of it between thumb and index finger and the grass cut at a slight diagonal, by doing this you will give some variation in height to the grass. still holding the grass between your fingers hold it verticaly over the glue about 10mm above it and let it gently drop from your fingers repeat this till you have covered the glue. Next a sprinkle of the fine turf light green over the area followed by a scraping of the brown pastel chalk. Now comes the really exiting bit, Get Your Balloon Time, take the balloon that a grown up has blown up for you, and rub it vigorously against your jumper to create a static charge, then pass it over the grass to make it stand up in the direction that you want. Heres some pictures that might explain it better, when you get into the swing of it,it is quite quick. When it's all dried give it a quick spray with the hairspray.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted July 25, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2014 As I scrolled down and saw the blue you'd sprayed the pan-scourer, I wondered what the hell you were playing at, but once you've added the coarse turf it looks spot on. Sorry for doubting you. Nice work, Al.
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted July 26, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 26, 2014 As I scrolled down and saw the blue you'd sprayed the pan-scourer, I wondered what the hell you were playing at, but once you've added the coarse turf it looks spot on. Sorry for doubting you. Nice work, Al. Hi Al, I must agree that it looks blue, it must be the lighting or lack of it, as it has been sprayed with a dusting of grey and a dusting of black from a rattle can. It does look dark grey in reality. At the moment I only have a 5' strip light over the baseboard and that is set at the far left end, so it does through up some some problems at the right hand end when trying to take pictures. I hope to redress this in the future. More flockage and grassage to follow soon, after I have taken my blue tinted sunglasses off, all the best Adrian

Sorry for doubting you. Nice work, Al. I also thought ummm a bit blue....then by the end....thought hey nice depth......and shadows are sometimes deep blue.....so it works.

RMweb Premium SM42 Posted July 26, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 26, 2014 Good stuff. I too wondered where the strange paint colour was going. Good to see some balloonage too. Andy
jcredfer
Yes but ..... the baloonage really passed away with the R101 tragedy ......... so it is good to see a [relatively] safe comeback ........ All this Blueage, blackage and sprayage, applied to a bit of a kitchen scrubber [which it might be observed, has already suffered at the hands of a bit of a rough evening! ] - when put together with the baloonage assited erectage - and all for the sake of a quickie bit of gorse getting laid .... - could make a person wonder if there isn't a touch of oldage involved ....... .. .. RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted July 29, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 29, 2014 Some fencing to keep you safe, and some long grass. The fencing is the Ratio lineside fencing posts that Ii have used before for Westerham and Brasted. the first thing to do when you open the packet, is find the coil of nylon that comes with the posts and chuck it in the bin, next ease the markings on the posts open with a razor saw. I use cotton, to string the fencing which is secured in the grooves on the posts with some gelled superglue. When all is secured the posts are painted a grey brown colour and the cotton a rusty sort of colour. The long grass is just a continuation of the same process as explained in the last post. I found that by putting the posts in first makes it a lot easier to landscape the grass up to them, rather than try to make holes through the grass for the posts and then try to thread the cotton afterwards. Here are some pictures.
Jaz
wow you have some patience, I have loads of the long grass. but chopping it and gluing it individual in small clumps does my head in. Kudos.
RMweb Gold JCL Posted July 29, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 29, 2014 I agree Jaz, sometimes there isn't a substitute for patience and hard work, I know, I've looked That's brilliant Adrian, I had a go at brambles on Wainfleet before I packed it away, and they were nowhere near as good as yours. I put together a "flock staticizer" like yours last year, but didn't cover the bare crocodile clip holding the earthing nail. Every three times I electrocuted myself I made myself a cup of tea and had a sit down. Focuses the mind you know.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted July 29, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 29, 2014 I didn't think this could get any better, that latest bit of landscaping is probably the best I've ever seen! Dave.
Sweven
I agree, that is superb work. Sometimes I find that scenery looks great either from a distance or in closeup and the brilliance is when it looks fantastic from all distances - as you have achieved here. ed1234
You have absolutely cracked the scrubby, unkempt and natural look that I remember so well from living near Westerham (Otford, in my case). Your ability to turn some pan scrubber and hairspray into something that transports me back there in an instant, and to buzzy summer days in that part of the world, is quite remarkable. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Andrew P
Just brilliant, not been in for a few days but I thought I'd better look in or I'd have Jaz on my case and chasing me around with the proverbial Wet Lettuce, hhahaha. Some cracking low level shots and superb detail. Great Stuff. Bodge
jcredfer
Not the first " Pygmalion" attempt ....................... turn some pan scrubber and hairspray into something that transports me... .................................... but - if I am honest ......................... apart from the singing ................... yours is much more plausible ...........
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted July 31, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 31, 2014 I'd have Jaz on my case and chasing me around with the proverbial Wet Lettuce Some blokes pay good money for a thrill like that!
Trade Member Strathwood Posted July 31, 2014 Trade Member Share Posted July 31, 2014 As one of nature's baldys I wonder if that balloon trick would work as well on my bonce... Will have a dry run on the next lot of layout scenery when the time comes and report, thats if I can get the balloon off my head. Kevin
