And yet another PDK A2/1 (builder/painter unknown) but now the property of The Green Howards.

Hi Tony, this one is mine. Built and painted by me. The boiler sits too high at the front and the handrails aren't in the right place. At some point I need to rework/replace the loco body. Chassis runs very well

The huge difference between the standard Hornby model and this one is the chassis, with much-improved motion (in this aspect, Hornby's A4 is rather weak).

 

You must be happy with it as is, because............

 

 

At a slightly later date, you brought along another A4 (I think this is hauling your train as well).

 

Subsequent visits have seen you run..............

 

 

An A2 (DJH).

 

 

A 9F.

 

 

Another A1 (your train again?).

 

 

An A2/1.

 

 

An A2/3.

 

 

And a K1.

 

 

As well as some Thompson cars.

 

And............

 

 

Did you ever finish this A2/2?

 

Thanks for bringing these models along over the last decade (there are others).

 

It's been (and continues to be) a privilege to have so many dear friends visit down the years, bringing with them their models to run.

 

I wonder just how many visiting locos/trains Little Bytham has been host to? Even those fitted with DCC are welcome!

The model is to 7mm scale, built by Tom Mallard from the Finney kit.

A voice from the past, hope you are well.

 

I enclose a photo of the PDK A2/1 which was built for me by Paul Hill.

 

It started out as 60509 Waverley then I renamed and numbered it to 60510 Robert the Bruce.

 

I sold it on with all my ex Haymarket locomotives, for the life of me i cannot remember who purchased it.

It might be a possibility from Hornby. The coupled wheelbase is the same as the A3/A4, and Hornby has done an A4 boiler for an A3. Part of the motion could come from the A2/2s/A2/3s I would think, and the tender is already in the range.

 

When I assisted Hornby with the A2/2 and A2/3 models' development (in a small way), the designer asked about the possibility of an A2/1 as well. Though nominally very similar (as 60508 approached my spot at Retford, it was virtually impossible to tell if it were an A2/1 or an A2/3), the smaller V2 boiler/firebox and 'V'-fronted cab would have have meant an entirely new suite of tools. Not only that, the whole loco was a bit shorter and the smoke deflectors, although very similar to the A2/3 type, were slightly different in having the horizontal part of the handrails higher.

 

Now, here's a thought. Has anyone tried 'marrying' a Hornby A2/3 with a Bachmann V2 to produce an A2/1?

Whilst I do love the Thompson pacifics, I'll certainly admit I find Great Northern the least aesthetically pleasing (especially with the original rebuild cab and running board) though something about this picture has convinced me I will have to get started on one of my own. I have been eyeing off a PDK A2/1 kit for some time as well, would be wonderful to have at least one of each type.

Lovely models indeed, and all your own work (much more 'noble' than most of mine). Nu-Cast kits?

 

It's splendid to see that you've added the extra strip to the base of 60507's tender's soleplate. It's very distinctive, seeing that the tender came from the smashed-up A4 during the air raid on York during the War. 

 

Three of these streamlined non-corridor tenders (as well as several corridor types) received these strips, which once carried the stainless steel adornments for locos working the streamlined expresses pre-War. Very few models carry it, so it's delightful to see such observation.

 

The other two streamlined non-corridor tenders with strips were attached to 60001............

 

 

And 60002. 

 

It really is very prominent.

 

 

Prominent enough for me to include on my model of 60002 (Bachmann/SE Finecast/Crownline/Wright/Rathbone). 

 

It's less prominent on the corridor tenders........

 

 

Where it appears to be an extension of the tender side, but worth putting on. It results in the lower lining appearing higher.

 

This is, of course, on a brass kit, soldered in place. Has anyone added it to Hornby tenders, I wonder?

The PDK kit for GREAT NORTHERN is the ex-Crownline one reworked (probably with improved components, especially the resin boiler - which originally was just plagiarised from a Hornby one).

 

 

The boiler needed a lot of cleaning up, but Ian Rathbone's superb painting disguised any blemishes.

 

 

When I saw the full-sized GREAT NORTHERN I was a lot younger than 'I' am in this picture!

 

 

Definitely a 'layout loco'.

On the subject mentioned before, I decided to satisfy a whim and see what other 'big' LNER passenger engines could theoretically be made, if the demand was there- with the self-added stipulations of being tender engines which (at least to the best of my knowledge) there were no RTR or kits available, and that they had to have lasted long enough to have made it into BR ownership; whether that means lettered tenders or the 'Cycling Lion'.

 

That would thus result in the remaining Thompson Pacifics; Robinson's B4's to B7's 4-6-0's and his 'Jersey Lillies' (the C4 class 4-4-2's); the ex-NER B16's, possibly the ex-NER C6's and C7's; the D20's, D30-34's, the D40's and D41's.

Well worth doing, though I haven't bothered on my (Golden Age) MERLIN, even though (as on yours) it should be there.

 

 

One would have thought that on a model costing over £1,000.00 (15 years ago!) that such a detail would have been incorporated (I still have no idea why I bought this loco). In fact, it looks a little like the tender has a lip at the bottom, only seen on the non-corridor types.

 

To be truthful.......

 

 

It's less-accurate than your MERLIN (which you brought down before the old girder bridge was replaced).

Interesting point - the criteria you have set is mine too. I am currently building B7 61711 which lasted until mid 1950 and sported "British Railways" on its tender. I have already built the last remaining B9 4-6-0 (61475, lasted until June 1949) which was re-numbered but still had "LNER" on the tender so perhaps does not quite meet the requirement? Anyway, this is how it looks:

 

This was built from a Judith Edge set of etches, which required a scratch built boiler and firebox but templates are provided. The etches are first class and free of charge is the invaluable web help and support form Michael Edge.

 

Quite a nice looking locomotive.
