Long Range bagpipes?

Call the UN, they're a weapon of mass destruction😄

BTW, NIGHTHAWKS is my favorite painting. The late John Armstrong built an O scale (1/48) diorama of it that is still in existence in private hands.

A take on Nighthawks is on my to do list as a diversion from Exhill Works... just need to round up some figures and a piece of curved Perspex for the window

I had another idea for a flow chart -

2141016751_ModelRailwayFlowChart.jpg.d7b29e7e2d8477973065b703a48bfc61.jpg

Notice that the flow allows for several endless iterations of the "Design Layout" and "Work On Layout" boxes, and for the user to start a new layout before the current one is finished. Some of us never answer "Yes" to the question "Is the layout finished?"

Ultimate pedant point, most of the rectangles on this diagram should be diamond shaped decision boxes.

I throw myself on the mercy of the court. They'd have needed to be a lot larger to fit the text in if they were diamond-shaped.

I used to have a boss who loved flow-charts. The amount of time we spent producing them was excruciating. For a joke we put up a flow chart in the office. He walked past, glanced at it and nodded approvingly, obviously not looking at the detail.

It was several days later that he realised the title of the flowchart was "Saturday Night Seduction".

Just for luckymucklebackit, a flowchart with the correct symbols: a "Start", several "Decision", a "Process" and a "Delay". There's no "End" in the chart - I think this one ends when your model railway  collection is in the hands of your executors...

Had he never heard the saying “A flowchart represents what a program/system used to do”?

Considering that I was working in Business Process Re-engineering that was exactly the situation. Most of the flowcharts represented how the companies functioned before we meddled with them updated their processes.

He was a strange character, apart from his fetish for flow charts. He used to say things like "There are no problems, only challenges and opportunities." and "Oh, do be positive."

He once asked to me go and see a client who was having some problems. I replied, "Well, I'll go and see him, but I can't promise anything. The man's an idiot." (This was the kind of thing you only said in private).

"Oh, do be positive." he replied.

"OK," I said. "I'm positive he's an idiot."

Hmmmmmm....

In my view "Will buying some new stock make me feel happy" is incorrectly terminated. There should be a "No" exit that feeds into "Delay - as short as possible" as you must consider that you might, at that precise moment, not be made happy by buying some new stock.

You have just put your finger on the essential problem with flowcharts.

They never survive contact with reality.

A key problem in systems analysis, you think that all possibilities have been covered and the processes completely mapped, but when you did your investigation, Old Bill, who sits at the far desk was on holiday and his contribution to the process completely negates what everyone else in the office thinks they are trying to achieve....

Standard programming procedure: cover all possible results you can think of (logical or illogical), then add an ‘any other result’ option - usually call for help then fall over.
