Tx, JS.  I wonder how long I'll remember that for...

Actually, The Squeeze, who is Polish, knows all this stuff and is a good reference source.

Countries are 100% man made, although sometimes very much shaped by the geography in which they're made.

May I submit exhibit A: Australia. Essentially defined by geography. (Island possessions notwithstanding.)

The population still had a bunch of hostiles around its frontier to contend with, though; flying flags with multiple crosses overlaid on them.

I cheated and copied it..

Officially the Republic of Türkiye

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey

That's part of the problem with it. "ü" isn't even a letter in English so how anyone can demand that that's the "correct" way to spell it in English...

I find the whole thing rather arrogant. We'd rightly get short shrift if the UK, for example, told the French that the country is "The United Kingdom" in French, and that they shouldn't call it "le Royaume-Uni." I presume they don't say United Kingdom in Turkish either ("Birleşik Krallık" according to Google Translate). You can't go around dictating what is correct in other languages!

You mean like Les Ètats Unis? Or Los Estados Unidos?

This is 'normal'.

I don't blame Türkiye from wanting to differentiate themselves from Christmas dinner.

I don't think they do that any more, but it would just be so appropriate...

I've usually had pork for Christmas dinner.

4th rail electrification was common on some underground railways, though that's not the case there!  Probably ready for relaying.
