Scary question

Two ethical questions:

Question 1:

If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis; would you recommend that she have an abortion?

Whilst you are thinking about that read the following:

Question 2:

It is time to elect the world leader, and yours is the deciding vote.

Here are the facts about the three leading candidates:

Candidate A:

Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with Astrologers. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

Candidate B:

He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whisky every evening.

Candidate C:

He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn't had any extramarital affairs.

Which of these candidates would be your choice?

Decide first, no peeking, then scroll down for the answer........

Candidate A ...

is Franklin D. Roosevelt

Candidate B ...

is Winston Churchill

Candidate C ...

is Adolph Hitler

And by the way how did you answer the abortion question?

If you said yes,

`

you just killed Beethoven.

But was Winston Churchill ever really sober?

I think if he drank a quart of whisky a day as alluded to, he would probably have trouble passing a modern day breathalyser for a driver. Not that driving was an issue as he had a government driver.

According to the man himself, "in the morning".

However, had Churchill really drunk a quart of whisky a day, every day, (in addition to the brandy, the champagne and the cocktails he was reputed to put away) I doubt he'd have lasted to the end of the war, let alone lived into his nineties.

Down a quart a day, regularly, and you'd probably still be over the driving limit a couple of days after the last one.

Churchill was a complex character, who suffered from clinical depression as well as being by any standards an alchoholic.  His success as a war leader was at least in part to an element in his character of ruthlessness and a lack of conscience that bordered on psychotic, witness his statement while First Lord of the Admiralty during WW1, before the Lusitania was attacked following notice of such action by the Germans.  He refused escorts for such civilian passenger traffic and commented 'if some of it gets into trouble, so much the better', with an eye on the propaganda opportunities; the British exploited these to the fullest extent and while there was more than one factor involved in bringing the Americans in on our side, it helped.  Churchill's idea in both wars was to get the Americans involved on our side, at any cost; he succeeded, but the economic implications hobbled us for the rest of the century.

Worth noting that Hitler declared war on the USA after Pearl Harbour, not the other way around, as he was bound to by his treaty with Japan, but it certainly played into Churchill's hand.  Hitler possibly miscalculated the extent to which American effort would be directed to the African and European theatres; American military production proved fully capable of full scale action on all fronts without disadvantaging the home economy, with spare for us and the Russians  .In fact it was this military production that ended the depression there and established that nations' premier position in World rankings that it still enjoys.

I consider his abandonment of Central European nations to Stalin's tyranny, especially Poland (on whose behalf we had gone to war in the first place), while probably unavoidable in the face of a Red Army fully prepared to keep invading countries until they got to the Atlantic, to be his least honourable act, and have to admit that it was probably Stalin's finest moment, in his terms anyway.

Talking of Winston Churchill.....

I doubt that is a Churchill quote. First of all he would not use the spelling "Whiskey", unless he meant Bourbon, in which case he would probably say "Bourbon".

"The internet" tells me it is by Logan Pearsall Smith, an American essayist. "The internet" is quite unreliable when it comes to quotes. Misquotes tend to proliferate.

I did see this one:

Quote

When I was a young subaltern in the South African War, the water was not fit to drink. To make it palatable we had to put a bit of whiskey in it. By diligent effort I learned to like it.

Aboard the Presidential train during the journey to Fulton, Missouri (March 4, 1946); quoted in Conflict and Crisis by Robert Donovan, University of Missouri Press (1996)

If the modern Olympic Games ran true to the strict customs of ancient Greece the clothing should be completely discarded as from the early 8th century BC, Olympic athletes competed in the nude, that said back then it was only male athletes that took part

The press photo of Ms Breen shows up progress in the world of athletics....

Ms Breen is, no doubt, on top of her game, and I applaud her.

The judge in the same photo of Ms Breen is of equal note.  It shows he is a contestant of the well-celebrated 'Pie, Mash & Peas' contest.

I think the official was trying to politely say "You're flashing your bits", but the competitor is determined to let her "outrage" spread all over the media.  Having said that, let 'em wear what they want to wear.  It'll boost the viewing figures....

Personally, I think the Norwegians were being sensible.  Formalised "beach games" always strive for the Baywatch look to attract spectators.

G'day, I thought it was quite funny, as you have one official saying it's to small, and another saying there to big. Crazy......

Had my Corona shot to-day, didn't know they were so big !!

What made me smile was the contradictory nature of the sporting officialdom, not in anyway, shape or form anything to do with bikini bottoms... (that is a whole set of different reasons for making me smile, which I will not go into here).

Sometimes I want an irony button but not often enough to justify one. Then I try a combination of our notification buttons. Then I end up writing some words - I noticed this too, if there isn't irony here then the officials (at least as reported) are verging on hypocrisy.

There is an increasing concern that the hot weather will lead to an increased number of Ticks, which could result in an increased risk of Lyme disease - as a result the next round of COVID jabs will be combined with a vaccine against Lyme disease, this will be known as the Corona and Lyme Vaccine.

Wasn’t your original post that was wandering off towards a woke and baywatch discussion Stu ;)  After a few tedious page long off topic debates of ‘analysis’ recently I just thought I’d steer it back to the smile subject faster.
