RMweb Gold Kingzance Posted February 25, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2020 That sir is, I believe, a “carbide lamp”. The lower part contains calcium carbide, the upper part water and there is a valve that connects the two chambers. As water falls onto the carbide, acetylene is released which is piped to the centre of the reflector and burns to give a rather yellow light, good enough in pitch black holes. The (much simplified and crude version of the) chemistry is as follows: Calcium Carbide (CaC2) + Water (H2O) = Calcium Oxide (CaO) + Acetylene (C2H2) For further reading (if interested), look up Union Carbide and Frederick Baldwin’s New York patent of 1900 for a bicycle carbide lamp.
jwealleans
i think it was the short cylindrical device directly adjacent to the wheel which was being referred to. i reckon it's a siren as well. Can you still get them?

RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted February 25, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2020 I wondered if the green zealots had been taunting the fire brigade for using diesel powered appliances, and this was the response. 1

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted February 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 26, 2020 Pity the gag's inaccurate! Archimedes of Syracuse didn't calculate a definitive Pi or a way to deduce it, only a pretty close approximation. Even the ancient Egyptians, a millenium earlier, got close. I did however notice the advert to the left indicating where Richard Branson’s ugly new cruise ship is going to be employed and the intended clientele - another that I shall quietly allow to pass me by!
