Doesn't work so well when most pronounce it nearer to what it should be as Goff or Goch (that o is as in dog!)

(Go is just wrong, IIRC that's the US way.)

Presumably by the same rule that meant it wasn't Ruud Gullit but Ruud "Hullit"?!?!

 

What went wrong with the creation of written language? Lots of nationalities all using the "same"  alphabet but many of them pronouncing the individual letters totally differently!

And the British do that within the same sentence!  Then there's regional variations eg "bath".
