The human side of the railway...

My guess is that the location in the background isn't a Network Rail location.

Odd then that they should put the notices on a gate - or are people meant to block it when parking?

And in supermarket car parks when you have a lot of shopping you can actually get it into your boot without difficulty if that end of the car stands open.  And it would also be a lot safer if people actually manage to park centrally in a space parallel to the lines (if they are parallel to each other of course) so I reckon Mickey's comment was on the money.

Is the worker on the left standing in a sensible safe place?

The photo was taken while the wooden part of Chesterfield platform over a road bridge was being replaced.

Following post 898, which featured a picture at Ickenham with a weekend closure for drainage renewal on one line, here's another image from early this morning.  Track replacement has started on the London-bound line just south of the station.  It's a long-planned block closure for multiple works, lasting three weeks and associated weekends:

Of course this means a bus diversion to West Ruislip and today, catching the first eastbound Central Line train to work.  Literally seconds before this berthed, a fleeting chance for pictures and later, during a morning break, two photo-merging experiments.  Locos and barrier wagons are stabled on the link line between Ruislip depot's 27 road and main line signal ME589, probably awaiting return northwards later in the day.  No human interest, but included for interest and modelling clues.

Some progress at Ickenham on this second weekend of a three-week block.  Conductor rails are down on the

London-bound track as far as the sub-station gap.

Looks like an end-of shift track walk in progress.

...something to stop and mark for attention:

Meanwhile the trains continue to run through the village in the form of the rail replacement bus service:

I will have to ask the question. Are those bespoke concrete sleepers by the catchpit or has someone been out with the disc cutter?

I did ask the question but forgot to post. The concrete sleepers were trimmed to fit where the catch pits are.

Oiling round after the 50 mile run from Wolsztyn, the loco in question being Poland's sole remaining pacific, PM36-2, named 'Beautiful Helena/Piekna Helena'. Interestingly the diesel in the background was withdrawn.

Poznan Depot, March 2012.

I'm sure they're plenty of downsides, but this looks to be a splendid way to spend a working day in August.

At least five railwaymen in the rear of Network Rail Inspection Saloon 975025 'Caroline' as it's hauled by 47790 on 2Z02, York to Derby, at Bradley Junction Huddersfield on 13th August 2014.

A fascinating thread. I have colected a number of autobiographies of old railwaymen which are fascinatting. Autobiographies by drivers and signalmen are significant in number. Guards stories are however rare. Any ideas why?
