The human side of the railway...

A photo I've posted elsewhere but, hopefully, not on here is this one that shows my late uncle, Stan Matthews, in the cab of a UP diesel Ca 1970.

Stan was a Brakeman and the photo was taken in Las Vegas before leaving for Los Angeles; a return trip he told me took a week.

Crikey, not just any UP diesel, the mother of all diesel's no less, a DD40X! :sungum:

Yes there was colour in the 1830's. Tony T at Bold colliery 1980. Had the pleasure of being Tony's fireman when he was passing out for driving in the 1960's, Mr Stanier had provided us with a cab by then.

That's, urm, bumpy!

Simon

I was thinking that, hopefully its the compression in the pic making it look worse than what it is.

I was on the Aylesbury re-doubling job (when ever that was?) and one of the ballast trains we were running came off because of track similar to that. It surprisingly  doesn't take very much if you have a wagon with a certain amount of twist already in it and especially when empty!

Plenty of human pics at the recent Kingmoor open day.

This lot were having fun writing in the muck!

And later at Carlisle station the southern end of P3 was occupied with photters waiting for the Northern Belle to get the best angle as it was due to go over to P1 (on the right). They weren't happy when it came straight into P3!

I've no time for the "OI, MATE!!" brigade. People can bring a picture to life.

I kick myself now, a Dad was pointing out the finer points of a Class 47 to his young lad and seeing camera asked me if I'd like to take a picture, yes says I and they politely moved out of what would've made a great shot. Still..

"Can I have salt & vinegar on mine please" ?

Sorry................................. :O

Sorry?  I thought that's what these Driver-to-shore radios were for, far better than sounding the engine whistle three times when you reckoned the Guard would also have time for a pint (standard procedure at Marston Crossing East for trains on the Up Loop so I've been reliably informed ;)
